Riverside Setting and Local History

Sobral do Campo lies on the right bank of the Ribeira da Ramalhosa, a tributary of the Rio Ocreza. Its waterside location provides a tranquil geographical reference point for your stay; another is the Rota das Fontes e do Azeite, which runs through the parishes of Ninho do Açor and Sobral do Campo. This lets you consider nature, local history and festival dates as different travel interests.

The settlement dates back to the first centuries of the Christian era. Sobral do Campo was first mentioned in writing in the 14th century. These are two distinct historical reference points: early settlement on the one hand, and the first written mention on the other. Several granite tombs from Roman times were found in the area between Ninho do Açor and Sobral do Campo.

Hiking the Rota das Fontes e do Azeite

The Rota das Fontes e do Azeite runs through Ninho do Açor and Sobral do Campo, passing several cultural and natural sights. Route PR12 is listed as 11.4 kilometres long. A leaflet dated December 2023 identifies it as a registered and officially approved hiking trail. Before setting out, check the latest route information so you can plan according to the information available.

The Capela do Espírito Santo is one of the route’s listed stops. One architectural detail can be pinpointed: the year 1721 is engraved in the frieze above the straight portal. For those interested in architectural history, the engraved date makes the portal a specific point of interest along the route.

Festivals and Traditional Customs

The Fogueiras de Natal are part of the tradition in the area of the União de Freguesias de Ninho do Açor e Sobral do Campo. On the night of 24–25 December, the Christmas bonfire is burned in the church square; confirm the exact village square locally. The fire is preceded by felling, gathering and transporting the wood. The fire and midnight Mass begin at midnight. This sequence gives the Christmas tradition its own rhythm, from preparing the wood to gathering together at night.
