Cortes do Meio appeals to travellers who want to consider nature, marked trails and a historic mountain village when choosing where to stay. In Serra da Estrela Natural Park, in the parish of Cortes do Meio, the Ribeira de Cortes feeds a reservoir used for swimming. At the same time, the Ribeira das Cortes flows around the village. The waterscape and village character are two distinct sides of this destination: pools and waterfalls offer a view of nature, while cobbled streets and granite houses invite you to explore the village.

Natural Pools and Waterfalls

Twelve natural pools are signposted in Cortes do Meio. Marked routes connect the pools, making it possible to explore the landscape on designated trails on foot or by mountain bike (BTT). Poço da Cascata lies at an altitude of 1,400 metres and has a 20-metre-high waterfall. Its elevation and the height of the waterfall give the site a distinctive landscape profile. The reservoir also shows how important water is to Cortes do Meio: it is used for swimming.

Some natural pools and waterfalls on the Ribeira de Cortes do Meio are difficult to reach because of the steep slopes. Conditions can change with the weather. If you plan to visit the pools and waterfalls, take access conditions into account and check conditions before your visit.

Hiking Trails with Different Themes

Rota das Pontes (PR17 CVL) is an eight-kilometre themed circular trail. It starts and ends at the playground in Aldeia de Montanha Cortes do Meio. Along the way, it passes several natural pools, with Poço do Funil considered a particular highlight. Its length, circular layout, and starting and ending points make it a clearly defined option for travellers looking for a named hiking route.

In addition, signposted routes connect the natural pools and can be used on foot or by mountain bike (BTT). This is a different way to explore the landscape from the Rota das Pontes: here, the network of trails between the pools is the focus, while the other route is a themed circular trail with a known start and finish. Rota da Broa, in turn, helps preserve and share the memory and history of the parish of Cortes do Meio. The trails therefore offer both nature-focused and cultural experiences.

Mountain Village, History and Local Traditions

Cobbled streets and granite houses with flower boxes shape the character of Cortes do Meio. The Ponte Velha sobre a Ribeira de Cortes is an important historical landmark in the mountain village. It adds a specific historical point of interest to the village’s natural attractions. Travellers who consider local history alongside hiking trails when choosing a destination will find both here, in the streetscape and at the historic bridge.

A ritual associated with São João takes place at Fonte das Três Bicas: at midnight, young people from the village break an egg. This tradition gives the village a cultural dimension distinct from its trails and water features. The parish also has its own culinary hallmark: cabrito is considered a gastronomic symbol of Cortes do Meio. Together, these features give a sense of how nature, village history and local identity can shape the choice of where to stay.
