Alpedrinha: Roman Roads and Historic Centre
Accommodation in Alpedrinha
Alpedrinha lies on the southern slope of the Serra da Gardunha and combines a traditional town centre with narrow streets and significant architectural heritage. Roman roads, manor houses and religious buildings provide different historical highlights. If you are looking for a hotel in Alpedrinha, you can match these themes to your travel plans: landscape, architecture and regional traditions offer different ways to shape your stay.
Landscape and Townscape
Alpedrinha lies at an elevation of about 556 metres. Mountain terrain, agricultural land and abundant water shape the landscape. In the town, narrow streets and significant architectural heritage define the traditional centre. When choosing your destination, you can therefore take into account both the elevation and landscape, as well as the town’s historic buildings.
Roman Roads and Architectural Heritage
The Zona Histórica de Alpedrinha is classified as a Conjunto de Interesse Público (CIP). A Roman road crosses Alpedrinha lengthwise through the entire town. The section of the ancient Roman roads in Alpedrinha is just under 200 metres long. It begins at Largo D. João V, near the Palácio do Picadeiro, and leads through the town of Portela towards Alcongosta.
Five Manueline houses have been preserved in the town centre; their window openings are decorated with relief motifs in the Manueline style. The Capela de Santa Catarina, also known as Capela do Leão, was founded around 1501 by D. Martinho da Costa. Its portal is inspired by the typology of portals attributed to Nicolau de Chanterene. Baroque woodcarving defines the interior of the Igreja da Misericórdia de Alpedrinha, alongside religious depictions.
Buildings, Museum and Traditions
The Casa da Comenda is a large manor house with three towers. The Casa do Cardeal de Alpedrinha dates from the 17th century, has a rectangular floor plan and consists of two interconnected structures. The Antigos Paços de Alpedrinha is a former town hall building, constructed in 1680. The year 1675 is recorded on the Pelourinho de Alpedrinha as its year of construction. The stone Monumento à Independência bears the engraved years 1140, 1640 and 1940. The dates serve different purposes: 1680 refers to the construction of the former town hall, 1675 is recorded on the Pelourinho as its year of construction, and three years are engraved on the Monumento.
The Palácio do Picadeiro houses a museum area with the Centro de Interpretação da Rota da Transumância. Traditional Embutidos, considered characteristic of Alpedrinha, are on display in the palace. Before visiting, check the current visiting and exhibition arrangements.
Chocalhos – Festival dos Caminhos da Transumância is a recurring festival in Alpedrinha that focuses on pastoral culture and regional traditions. The 25th edition was announced for 2026. The festival includes craft workshops in Alpedrinha. It also offers opportunities to sample gastronomic products from the Município do Fundão.
