Get to know Idanha-A-Nova through several of its defining features: the landscape of the Tagus International Natural Park, a vibrant musical culture, historic places and regional food culture. This lets you shape your trip around the experiences that interest you most, rather than limiting your stay to a single theme.

Landscape and activities

The Tagus International Natural Park covers parts of the municipality of Idanha-A-Nova. The municipality also holds, among other designations, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status. The Falha do Ponsul offers a different perspective on the landscape: it runs from Serrinha near Arneiro to Monfortinho and continues into Spain. Its escarpment stretches for more than 120 kilometres. Protected-area status and geological structure thus offer two distinct ways of viewing the landscape.

If you are planning a hike, PR 1 IDN – Rota dos Abutres is a designated short route. From Termas de Monfortinho, you can explore the region through nature tourism, canoeing, mountain biking, hiking, horse riding, birdwatching and orienteering. For specific activities, it is advisable to check availability in advance.

The range of activities at the Idanha-A-Nova Nautical Station includes canoeing, sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, canyoning, white-water activities, activities in bathing areas and sport fishing. Here too, it is worth checking the current availability of individual activities. At the Barragem Marechal Carmona, recreation and leisure are possible in harmony with nature, adding a dedicated natural setting for leisure to the range of options.

Music and cultural venues

Idanha-A-Nova is a UNESCO Creative City of Music. Adufe tambourines are considered a true symbol of local identity. The Idanhense Brass Band gives people of all ages the opportunity to experience and take part in traditional and contemporary music. Fora do Lugar – Early Musics International Festival is also part of this cultural profile: since 2012, it has brought classical music and popular expression together in unusual venues. Each festival edition has its own dates; check them before planning a trip around the event.

At the Centro Cultural Raiano, the focus is on cultural heritage and how it is shared. The centre coordinates research, preservation and interpretation related to the heritage of Idanha-A-Nova. Several exhibition spaces and an auditorium with around 260 seats provide a setting for performing arts productions and museum programmes. The cultural offer therefore includes both stage productions and museum content.

History and religious tradition

The origins of Idanha-A-Nova are linked to a castle built in 1187 on the orders of Gualdim Pais. Another chapter in local history leads to the Minas de Segura, part of the historic Segura mining district, where tungsten, tin, gold, zinc and lead were extracted. These places represent different historical themes: the founding of the municipality on the one hand, and the former extraction of mineral resources on the other.

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Almortão features 18th-century tiles in the main chapel and at the altar. The sanctuary is also a pilgrimage site. The most popular pilgrimage takes place fifteen days after Easter Sunday. If you would like to plan your trip around this recurring event, check the dates of the relevant pilgrimage in advance.

Regional cuisine

The food culture also offers specific points of interest. Azeitona Galega da Beira Baixa PGI is produced in every parish of the municipality of Idanha-A-Nova. This connects the speciality to the municipality as a whole, rather than to just one place. Another traditional dish is Cabrito assado no forno, a recipe passed down from generation to generation. Together, these examples show different aspects of regional food culture: a product made across the municipality and a dish whose preparation has been handed down over generations.
