The Meandros do Zêzere are an exceptional example of deeply incised meanders and are classified as one of the Geopark Naturtejo’s geomonuments. The river bends reveal a striking aspect of Oleiros’ landscape.

River Landscapes and Views

Another geological feature is the Garganta do Zêzere: the gorge is more than 300 metres deep and is also one of the Geopark Naturtejo’s geomonuments. At the Miradouro do Cabeço do Mosqueiro, the perspective shifts from the valley to the heights. The viewpoint is at an altitude of 666 metres and 300 metres above the River Zêzere; from here, panoramic views extend across the Central Cordillera. The viewpoint also has a picnic park and supporting facilities.

The Ribeira de Oleiros also flows year-round, including during the summer months. Natural pools can be found at the Moinhos da Lameira and da Tojeira. The water is used for fishing and recreational activities. The region’s water landscapes are therefore varied: alongside the deep forms of the Zêzere are the pools and the steady flow of the Ribeira de Oleiros.

Riverside Swimming Areas

For the 2026 bathing season, Praia Fluvial de Açude Pinto once again received the Blue Flag. Praia Fluvial de Álvaro has two floating pools in the River Zêzere. Seasonal operations there may vary, so check the current situation before planning a visit. The two bathing spots each have their own connection to the water, while the award for Açude Pinto applies specifically to the 2026 season.

Hiking: Trails, Routes and Starting Points

The themed walking trail À Descoberta da Ribeira uses boardwalks intended to improve the route’s accessibility and safety. For a religious-themed outing, the Rota do Religioso connects eight chapels and two churches in Oleiros. The circular route is about 6.5 kilometres long and starts at the Memorial Padre António de Andrade.

A route description from September 2024 describes the PR3 OLR GeoRota do Orvalho as a challenging trail of just under nine kilometres. It starts at the Igreja Matriz do Orvalho in Oleiros and ends at the Miradouro do Cabeço do Mosqueiro; some sections follow wooden boardwalks. The PR1 OLR Nos Meandros do Zêzere is also in Oleiros and starts in Álvaro. As trail conditions can change, check the route’s current condition before setting out.

Villages, Churches and Remembrance

The Aldeia do Xisto de Álvaro stretches along a slope above the Zêzere. It is one of the white villages in the Schist Villages network; Álvaro is also known for its rich religious heritage. In Oleiros, the Igreja Matriz de Oleiros dates from the 16th to the 18th century, and the Igreja da Misericórdia de Oleiros dates from the 16th century, during the reign of D. Manuel I. Both churches are classified as buildings of public interest. The ceiling of the Igreja Matriz’s central nave is covered with 30 polychrome wooden panels. At the Igreja da Misericórdia, two outdoor altars serve as stations during the Passos processions.

The Memorial Padre António de Andrade commemorates the Jesuit, born in 1581, who was the first Westerner to reach Tibet in 1624. Above the Ribeira de Oleiros, Moon Gate also honours his memory: the circular installation is made of amber-coloured resin and measures two metres in diameter.

Regional Cuisine and Trees

Cabrito Estonado is a recipe associated exclusively with Oleiros. Traditionally, it is roasted in a wood-fired oven with the skin left on. Vinho Callum is made from a unique grape variety found only in Oleiros. Traditional dishes also include Maranhos. The traditional Broa de milho from Isna is considered unique in the region. Also associated with Isna are the Castanheiros da Isna, whose chestnuts are described as high quality and are highly valued in local cuisine.

The chestnut groves are also notable in the landscape: the centuries-old chestnut trees of Estreito (Castanea sativa) have trunk circumferences of more than five metres and are probably among the oldest in the region. Beside Oleiros’ parish church stands the remarkable Freixo do Adro, with a trunk circumference of more than four metres. A relic forest of the Laurissilva, with subtropical and moisture-loving species, is found in Vale das Fragosas.
