Capela da Misericórdia is in the historic centre of Pedrógão Pequeno; it was probably built in the 16th century. Igreja Matriz was also likely built in the mid-16th century and was probably completed in 1587. Those interested in the town’s architectural history will find in these two religious buildings early examples, each dated with due caution.

Chapels and Local History

Capela de Nossa Senhora da Confiança was built in 1902 on the ruins of an older chapel, whose origins, according to tradition, date back to the 16th century. Capela de Santo António is in the oldest part of Pedrógão Pequeno, nestled among exposed granite rocks; it was built before 1730. The construction dates and locations of these two chapels tell different parts of the town’s history.

Capela de São Sebastião adds a changing history to this sequence: until 1892, it served as the religious building for Pedrógão Pequeno’s former cemetery; it then fell into disrepair and was rebuilt in 1918 by the Vidigal family with the support of local residents. Thus, the local architectural history encompasses both early dates and later alterations and reconstruction.

The Pelourinho de Pedrógão Pequeno stands on a circular platform with three steps and has a smooth, cylindrical column. It was reconstructed in 1959. An earlier pillory was erected in 1448, when the town was granted vila status, and destroyed that same year. The present description of the pelourinho thus brings together a specific architectural form and a longer history of construction, destruction and reconstruction.

Exhibitions at the Núcleo Museológico

The Núcleo Museológico de Pedrógão Pequeno is dedicated to preserving and presenting the region’s historical, cultural and architectural heritage. The permanent exhibition Casa dos Saberes e Sabores explores traditional ways of life, old crafts and local flavours. A permanent exhibition of Templar funerary steles from the medieval necropolis of Pedrógão Pequeno complements these themes with a look at the medieval heritage.

The museum is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00, as well as Sunday from 10:00 to 13:00. Guided tours must be booked in advance. Check the opening hours before your visit and make sure to book a tour ahead of time.

The Zêzere, the gorge and a hiking stage

Pedrógão Pequeno lies on the left bank of the Zêzere, a few kilometres from the Cabril Dam. Ponte do Cabril is located in a deep gorge on the river, between the dam of the same name and the new bridge. Its striking setting in the landscape offers a different focus from the architectural history of the chapels and the pelourinho.

Hiking is also among the area’s attractions: one stage of the Grande Rota do Zêzere GR33 runs from Sra. da Confiança to Pedrógão Pequeno. This connects the town both with its architectural history and with its role as the destination of a described hiking stage.

A mural in Pedrógão Pequeno recalls the town’s historic places and moments. The town was once known as «Sintra da Beira». The mural was inaugurated on 24 June 2025. Alongside the chapels, the pelourinho and the museum exhibitions, it offers another reason to explore Pedrógão Pequeno’s history and cultural heritage during a stay.
