The GR33 lists the Área de Descanso da Arrochela as the starting and ending point for various stages. The fifth section of the Grande Rota do Zêzere is called “Sob o Signo do Cabril” and is 62 km long. It connects Cambas in the municipality of Oleiros with Pedrógão Pequeno in the municipality of Sertã. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing this long section from the individual stages identified by their start and end points.

GR33 Stages at Cabril

The “Área de Descanso da Arrochela > Sra. da Confiança” stage begins at the Área de Descanso da Arrochela and ends at Nossa Senhora da Confiança. It runs along the shore of the Albufeira do Cabril reservoir for about 1.5 km. This approximate distance refers to the stretch along the shore on the stage, not to the length of the entire fifth section. Two different scales therefore feature on the same route: the 62 km section between Cambas and Pedrógão Pequeno, and a stage with a roughly 1.5 km stretch along the shore. Conditions by the water may vary seasonally; check trail conditions before setting out.

Another GR33 stage connects Madeirã with the Área de Descanso da Arrochela. After Madeirã, it once again follows forest tracks towards the river. Its endpoints and described route distinguish it from the stage that begins at the Área de Descanso da Arrochela and ends at Nossa Senhora da Confiança. When comparing the two connections, you can therefore use their respective start and end points and the route features described, rather than treating them as a single route.

The “Sob o Signo do Cabril” section comprises nine walking stages, one additional variant, one mountain-biking stage, and two canoe stages. This breakdown shows that the route structure covers several modes of travel: the nine walking stages are listed separately from the variant and the mountain-biking and canoe stages. Check trail conditions before setting off, especially when choosing a specific stage.

Views and Scenery

From the Miradouro de Nossa Senhora da Confiança, you can see a broad stretch of the Albufeira do Cabril reservoir. The viewpoint is located on Monte de N.ª Sr.ª da Confiança in the schist village of Pedrógão Pequeno. This identifies both the landscape feature—a view over a broad part of the reservoir—and the location of the viewpoint.

Cultural and Historical Sites

In the area around Arrochela, the Festa de Nossa Senhora da Confiança lasts three days. It takes place at the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Confiança, a small temple with medieval features, built over the remains of a pre-Lusitanian Castro. The festival’s duration and the building’s history provide different points of reference: the three days relate to the Festa, while the historical background describes the festival venue.

Another historical structure is the Ponte Filipina de Pedrógão Pequeno. It was built between 1607 and 1610. Together with the GR33 stages described and the viewpoint, it complements the hiking and landscape themes with historical architecture and local history.
