Unhais da Serra lies in the Alforfa glacial valley in the heart of the Serra da Estrela. If you are choosing a destination where mountain scenery, historic routes and water-based experiences each offer something different, this location is a clear starting point. The routes showcase different aspects of the region: they open up the Serra da Estrela through hiking trails or reveal traditional activities and former connections. The Aquadome and the river beach add two distinct water-based experiences.

Hiking Trails and Routes in the Serra da Estrela

The Rota das Termas is a circular hiking trail of moderate difficulty that explores the Serra da Estrela. Its sights include Fonte da Saúde, Ribeira da Estrela, Sítio dos Poisos, the Canadas de Unhais and Ribeira da Alforfa. Along the same route, you will find regional architectural features associated with traditional pastoral activities. Both these locations and the cultural landscape are therefore among the route’s defining features. Check the local trail markers before setting out; route conditions may change.

The Rota das Canadas de Unhais is another route, covering 12.3 km. Check the local signposting before setting out here, too. At around 8 km, the Rota do Pão e da Serra is shorter than this route.

Cultural Heritage and Traditional Routes

The Canadas de Unhais da Serra are a part of the area’s heritage, closely linked to transhumance and connecting the village with the mountain pastures. Transhumance refers to the seasonal movement of livestock between grazing areas; here, the cultural connection runs from Unhais da Serra up to the mountain pastures. This makes the landscape understandable through its traditional use as well as its routes and place names.

The Rota do Pão e da Serra brings the stages of breadmaking to life, from the grain fields to the mills and communal ovens. This sequence shows bread as the result of several interconnected stages of work. Together with its approximate length of 8 km, this gives the route both a cultural focus and a specific distance.

The Rota dos Carvoeiros offers a different historical perspective. It retraces part of the route taken by the inhabitants of this section of the Serra da Estrela to Covilhã, where they sold their goods. A report from July 2024 describes the route as connecting Torre in the Serra da Estrela with the parish of Unhais da Serra. The route thus centers on both its historical connection and its links to two named places.

Aquadome and River Beach

As Portugal’s first mountain spa, the Aquadome combines leisure areas with hydrodynamic pools, thermal facilities, body and facial treatments, massages and a physiotherapy area. The Aquadome’s water is described as containing sodium bicarbonate, carbon dioxide, fluoride and sulfide. It emerges at the spring at 38°C. These water properties and the spring temperature give the thermal offering a distinct focus within the destination.

The Praia Fluvial de Unhais da Serra offers a different experience: this river beach uses water from the Ribeira de Unhais, a tributary of the Zêzere. This distinguishes two different water experiences: thermal facilities at the Aquadome and river water at the Praia Fluvial.
