In Vila De Rei, geodetic landmarks, river landscapes and traces of gold mining meet a rich local culture. There are several ways to shape your trip: take in the wide-ranging views from the Centro Geodésico de Portugal, discover water and rock at Penedo Furado, or learn about the region’s history and traditions.

Views and orientation at the Centro Geodésico

From Vila De Rei, you can reach the Centro Geodésico de Portugal via a signposted turnoff: first, follow the road towards Sertã for 1.8 kilometres, then continue for another 900 metres. The EN2 is another notable landmark: it runs through Vila De Rei, and at kilometre 369.6, the road’s central point is located here, alongside the Centro.

The Centro offers 360-degree views of the Serra da Lousã and, on clear days, the Serra da Estrela as well. It includes a themed exhibition space, a small auditorium, a souvenir shop and a bar. The Museu da Geodesia opened in 2002 as part of a partnership between the Direção Geral do Território and the Câmara Municipal de Vila de Rei. The views, exhibition and facilities each offer a different aspect of the site.

River landscapes, rocks and waterfalls

Praia Fluvial de Fernandaires lies beside an extensive pool fed by the Castelo de Bode reservoir and surrounded by wooded mountains. It has a municipal jetty for leisure and maritime tourism boats. From Miradouro de Fernandaires, you can see the reservoir, the village and the Praia Fluvial. The pool, viewpoint and jetty each represent a distinct feature of this place.

At Penedo Furado, clear water flows through a natural cleft in the rock; striking rock formations and waterfalls define the area. The Passadiços do Penedo Furado form a circular route of around two kilometres. The award-winning Praia Fluvial do Penedo Furado is recommended as the starting point. The route also passes the “Bicha Pintada” fossil. Some scientists believe the fossil is probably more than 480 million years old.

Pego das Cancelas offers another way to experience nature: paths by the Praia Fluvial lead through almost untouched woodland and invite you to observe wildlife. The stream at Pego das Cancelas is rich in fish, including barbel, boga and bordallo.

Trails, bridges and historic places

The PR5 – Rota do Bostelim follows the Ribeiras do Bostelim and da Isna to the centuries-old Ponte da Várzea Carreira. Its proximity to the water, tree shade and several sights along the way characterise this route. The PR4 – Caminho de Xisto de Água Formosa follows old paths used by millers and farmers along the Ribeiras da Galega and da Valada; the route is currently undergoing maintenance. In Água Formosa itself, hillside houses, slate-paved streets and a medieval bridge are among the place’s defining features.

Gold mining has also left visible traces. Vila De Rei has 45 Conheiras, open sites where alluvial gold was mined. The PR6 – Rota das Conheiras is temporarily closed. Features of the route include piles of rounded stones from alluvial gold mining, which probably date from Roman times or an earlier period. The route also passes the remains of mining faces that have probably been there since the Iron Age.

Culture, crafts and culinary traditions

The Museu do Fogo e da Resina explores the relationship between fire, local communities, forests and traditional resin extraction. Other local traditions include basketry, weaving, decorative arts, beekeeping, creative sewing and embroidery. The Rainha Santa festivities are held every May in honour of Dona Isabel.

Culinary traditions also add a distinctive touch to a trip. They include cured meats, fresh and aged cheeses, honey, Sopa de Peixe and Bacalhau à Vila de Rei. When choosing accommodation for your stay in Vila De Rei, consider whether you would like to focus your trip on views and riverscapes, historical traces or local culture.
