Archaeology, castle and churches
The Núcleo Museológico de Arqueologia is housed in Castelo de Alcoutim and presents the exhibition “O Património Arqueológico de Alcoutim”. The present-day Castelo de Alcoutim began to take shape during the Christian Reconquista. Its construction or remodelling is thought to date to the second half of the 13th century.
Castelo Velho, also known as Castro de Santa Bárbara, is considered an important monument of Portugal’s Islamic period and one of the most important Islamic military sites in the Algarve. The Coleção Jogos Intemporais includes the largest collection of Islamic board games known in Portugal, as well as the only Mancala examples known in the country.
The churches also reflect different architectural periods. Igreja Matriz S. Salvador is one of the finest examples of the early Renaissance in the Algarve. Ermida de Nossa Sr.ª da Conceição retains a Manueline portal from its renovation campaign in the second decade of the 16th century. Igreja da Misericórdia was built in the 16th century. Military engineers built the Escadaria Barroca in the second half of the 17th century or at the beginning of the 18th century to connect the church with the Vila.
Historic connections and everyday life
Cais Velho has long served as Alcoutim’s main link with the Guadiana: regional products arrived and were shipped out through it, and it was also a departure and arrival point for travellers. This historic connection to the river complements today’s opportunities to explore the Guadiana on a boat trip or canoe tour.
Mercado Municipal de Alcoutim serves the production and resale of food and regional products. Casa dos Condes currently houses the municipal library, with a library collection, video library, internet access and a space for temporary exhibitions. Check opening hours and the current exhibition programme before visiting.
