Vaqueiros: Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Vaqueiros
Vaqueiros brings together several named hiking trails and cultural and historical points of interest. The route details refer to different scales: an individual route, a connection between places, and a long-distance trail. When choosing a route, it is worth looking closely at the names PR8 and Connection 8, which refer to different routes despite sharing the same number.
Hiking trails and route distances
PR8 – “Em busca do Vale Encantado” is an approximately 13 km hiking trail in the “short route” category. The Via Algarviana (GR13) is a 300 km long-distance trail that passes through Vaqueiros. Connection 8 of the Via Algarviana runs from Vaqueiros to Martim Longo and is 18.7 km long. The figures therefore refer to different scales: approximately 13 km for a hiking trail, 18.7 km between two named places, and 300 km for the entire long-distance trail. When comparing routes, consider not only the distance in kilometres but also whether it describes an individual route, a connection between places, or a long-distance trail.
PR9 ACT – “Percurso Interpretativo da Aldeia Típica de Vaqueiros” starts and ends at Aldeia Típica de Vaqueiros. Unlike Connection 8, the same place is named as both the starting point and the endpoint; Martim Longo is the destination of Connection 8. The audio-guided route “Entre Montes e Moinhos” is also located in the parish of Vaqueiros. This means you can distinguish the routes not only by their length, but also by their named endpoints and whether they include an audio guide.
Landscape and wildlife you may encounter
If you also pay attention to landscape details along a route, PR9 ACT offers specific sights along the way. These include cork oak and holm oak montado woodlands, hedgerows lined with olive trees, pine plantations, wheat fields, and vegetable gardens. Wild boar, foxes, ichneumons, rabbits, hares, and genets may also be found along the route. Connection 8 passes through the Ribeira da Foupana, whose lush vegetation is one of the highlights of this route.
The Parque de Merendas Fonte da Parra picnic area is next to the Vaqueiros dam. A “short route” category hiking trail also runs alongside the dam.
Church and former museum history
The Igreja de São Pedro is the parish church of Vaqueiros. It probably dates back to the 16th century and was renovated in the 18th century. The 18th century therefore refers to a later renovation, not the church’s presumed origins.
Another historical point of interest is the former Núcleo Museológico de Vaqueiros. It opened in June 2001 in the old primary school of Vaqueiros with the exhibition “Vidas no Campo”. It closed to the public in April 2004 and was subsequently dismantled. For planning a trip today, the Núcleo is therefore a historical point of interest, not a current museum offering.
