Oliveira Do Douro: River Landscapes, Paths and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Oliveira Do Douro
Oliveira Do Douro combines river landscapes with historic buildings and paths through the region. Boassas offers a distinctive perspective on village history and architecture: its narrow streets and flower-filled courtyards lead through a village setting where traditions and the regional landscape complement each other.
Rivers and landscapes around Oliveira Do Douro
Boassas lies above the Douro, the Pala Reservoir and the Bestança Valley. The Rio Bestança is about 13.5 kilometres long and flows into the left bank of a Douro reservoir at Porto Antigo, between the municipalities of Oliveira do Douro and Cinfães. It is included in the Natura 2000 network and classified as a Corine Biotope 1. Descriptions also characterize it as a river with clear water and diverse life.
The Rio Cabrum follows a different course: it rises near the Serra de Montemuro and flows into the Douro in the area of Oliveira Do Douro. While the Bestança is associated with its river landscape and designated environmental classifications, the Cabrum is considered suitable for adventure sports such as canyoning in the Oliveira Do Douro area. This distinguishes two different river-related aspects of the region.
From the Miradouro e Parque de Merendas da Trincheira, you can enjoy views of the river. The site also offers a space for relaxation and socializing. The Cais de Porto Antigo in Oliveira do Douro is designated as a departure point for boat trips on the Douro. If you are planning a trip, check the current times beforehand.
Boassas: Lanes, Courtyards and Architectural History
Arribada is the oldest part of Boassas. Its appearance reflects Mediterranean influences as well as the Arab-Islamic presence in the Douro region. In its narrow streets and characteristic courtyards, blooming flowers in colourful containers are part of the described village setting. The lanes and courtyards also convey the architecture, traditions and myths of Boassas. The Associação do Turismo de Aldeia has classified Boassas as an “Aldeia de Portugal.”
Several houses bring the architectural history to life. Casa do Fundo da Rua is an 18th-century house with a coat of arms that belonged to the Serpa family. Casa do Cubo stands beside the chapel at the edge of Arribada. At Casa da Calçada, the main façade faces the Douro. The house was built in the 18th century and later shaped by a neoclassical extension constructed towards the end of the same century.
The religious buildings also bring together different periods. The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Estrela in Boassas was founded in the 16th century and rebuilt in 1710. The Church of São Miguel de Oliveira do Douro was incorporated into the estate of the Mosteiro de Santo André de Ancede in 1294. In 1391, the right of patronage over the church was added to an earlier donation to the monastery.
Crafts and paths offer further perspectives
In Boassas, Latoaria (tinwork) is considered one of the few traditional crafts still practised. Basket weaving uses willow rods, chestnut rods, straw and blackberry canes. Ceramic art is also a factor in local development. These crafts add ongoing and culturally significant activities to the perspective offered by the historic houses.
The Caminho da Fonte da Pedra is considered one of the most characteristic paths in Boassas. Another described route starts there and initially follows the mid-slope, offering panoramic views of the Douro. It then leads to the church of Oliveira do Douro and continues along the path to the castle and on to Vila Nova. The route description therefore conveys both the landscape views and the sequence of stops; this path is not the same as the Caminho da Fonte da Pedra.
Whether you are more interested in architectural history, crafts, river landscapes or a particular route: each offers a different focus. For a visit centred on cultural history, Arribada, the houses and the church chronology provide specific points of interest; paths and rivers reveal other sides of the region.
