Volodarskiy District brings together the semi-desert landscapes of the Caspian Lowland and the Volga Delta, with its 383 islands. These two landscapes give a trip different points of focus: in the delta, waterways, riparian forests and wildlife shape the nature experiences; in the villages, museums, churches and places of remembrance take center stage. You can plan your visit around the things that interest you most on site.

Water landscapes in the Volga Delta

One special way to explore the delta is Water Route 2-O in the Obzhorovsky section. The 28-kilometer route takes four hours and follows waterways past delta islands by motorboat. Along the way, it takes you through gallery forests, reed thickets and stands of sacred lotus, as well as the flora and fauna of these habitats.

Along the water route, a network of river branches and eriiks crisscrosses the landscape; aquatic plants and riparian forests shape the islands. Here you can spot sea eagles and other birds of prey, various herons and woodland birds. American mink, raccoon dogs and muskrats are also among the animals you may see there.

The two ways of exploring differ in their focus: Route 2-O takes you by motorboat through aquatic and riparian habitats; the walking excursion leads through Tsvetnoye and its surroundings to named cultural sites and places of remembrance.

Museums, churches and festive traditions

In Altynzhar, the Kurmangazy Sagyrbaev Museum presents exhibitions on the history and culture of the Kazakhs of Astrakhan Oblast, the history of the Bukey Khanate, and relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Astrakhan Oblast. The life and artistic legacy of Kurmangazy Sagyrbaev are also among its subjects.

A walking excursion takes you through the village of Tsvetnoye and its surroundings. Stops include the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, Victory Park and the Museum of Military Glory at Tsvetnovskaya Secondary School. Further stops are in the village of Razino: the Church of Saint and Right-Believing Prince Alexander Nevsky and Razin Hill. The obelisk to participants in the Great Patriotic War is also part of the excursion.

You can take the walking excursion year-round; arrange it in advance with the operator. A visit to the museum in Tsvetnoye is organized by arrangement with the head of the school museum at Tsvetnovskaya Secondary School.

Nauryz and Sabantuy are among the calendar festivals of Turkic-speaking Kazakhs and Nogais. This cultural heritage is preserved through contemporary celebrations at district and regional levels.

More places to explore in Astrakhan Oblast

The wider destination of Astrakhan Oblast is home to Bolshoye Bogdo. At 149.6 meters, its summit is the highest point in the Caspian Lowland; from there, the panorama stretches across Lake Baskunchak and the Sharbulak area. The Astrakhan Nature Reserve covers 67,920 hectares and comprises three widely separated sections in the lower reaches of the Volga Delta: Damchiksky in the west, Trekhizbinsky in the center and Obzhorovsky in the east. The archaeological site of Sarai-Batu in Selitrennoe is also in Astrakhan Oblast. It is the largest capital monument of the Mongol nomads who settled in the sparsely populated steppes of the lower Volga region in the late 13th to 14th centuries, after the Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan broke apart.
