Discover the Chuvash Republic
Accommodation in Chuvash Republic
Explore the Chuvash Republic through its cultural offerings, and you’ll find textile history, themed walking tours and museums in Cheboksary. The Cheboksary Bay waterfront also features an almost four-kilometre-long promenade, while other attractions explore Chuvash legends and traditions.
Embroidery history in Cheboksary
At the Museum of Chuvash Embroidery, the first exhibition hall traces the history of folk embroidery from the 18th century through its professional development in the 20th century. Among the oldest and most valuable exhibits are an 18th-century women’s shirt with three pairs of kĕskĕ chest patterns, a bridal coverlet and the groom’s cloths with embroidery on both sides. Individual textile pieces are presented within a broader account of the craft’s development.
The museum is housed in a historic two-storey building in central Cheboksary and opened there on 23 June 2015. The building initially served as an infirmary for soldiers in the Tsarist army. As a branch of the Chuvash National Museum, the embroidery museum is part of an institution regarded in the republic as a centre for ethnic tourism.
The “Creative Workshop” room hosts a range of classes and workshops for children from preschools and general education schools in Cheboksary and the republic. The Chuvash National Museum also has its own activities for children: in an interactive archaeology area, they can search a purpose-built sandbox for replicas of everyday objects and the remains of prehistoric animals.
Walking tours and museum visits
The Chuvash National Museum offers the walking tour “From Fortress to Capital,” lasting up to two hours and taking visitors through the historic part of the city. The “Merchants’ Quarter” tour follows the boulevard and includes a visit to an exhibition on the history of the Chuvash region and the Chuvash people from the 9th to the early 20th century, as well as the Merchants’ Hall in the Museum and Exhibition Centre. The two tours have different focuses: one explores the historic district, while the other features the exhibition and the Merchants’ Hall.
Another option is “Walks with Chapayev”: the route passes through a park and includes a visit to the V. I. Chapayev Museum. You can use the themes of the available tours to help plan your visit; check the museum’s latest information about the tours in advance.
At Cheboksary Bay and in the museums
An uninterrupted promenade almost four kilometres long stretches along Cheboksary Bay. It features benches, a level surface, lighting and cycle paths. Catamaran rides are also available on the bay, depending on the season. A walk and a water-based activity offer different ways to spend time along this waterfront.
The Chuvash State Art Museum regularly hosts touring exhibitions of paintings, ceramics, glasswork, metalwork and photographs. They showcase works by contemporary artists from various disciplines. The Museum of Tractor History offers a different thematic focus: its exhibition areas cover ploughing technology and self-propelled machinery, the development from steam engines to powerful diesel engines, and domestic and foreign tractor manufacturing. Other topics include manufacturers of industrial, forestry and agricultural tractors, the tractor of the future and legends of tractor manufacturing.
Chuvash cultural experiences
Every year, the Suvar Ethnopark hosts a sculpture symposium dedicated to Chuvash ritual wood sculpture. The Yasna Ethnographic Complex promotes tours and programmes about Chuvash legends, themed activities and the culture of the Chuvash people. Its advertised offerings also include seasonal festivals and celebrations in the atmosphere of a Chuvash village, ethnic photo shoots, and national entertainment for children and people of all ages. Check the details of Yasna’s offerings directly with the operator before your trip.
These highlights can help guide your destination choice for a hotel trip: Cheboksary is known for the museums and walking tours described here, while a seasonal catamaran ride on the bay offers a different activity.
