Historical landmarks meet striking landscapes in Derbent District. The Church of Saint Grigoris in Nyugdi was built in memory of events in the 4th century. In Gedzhukh, the wine cellars of the “Gedzhukhsky” winery tell of a different era: they were built in the 1860s on the instructions of Count Illarion Ivanovich Vorontsov-Dashkov. The church and the wine cellars offer contrasting historical perspectives: a religious memorial site on the one hand, and a complex with a 19th-century construction history on the other.

Historical traces in Derbent District

The history of the Rubas Wall also spans several periods. Fragments of the old wall were described by travelers as early as the 17th and 18th centuries. In February 2014, remains of an old structure were discovered in the Rubas River valley, where it meets the coastal plain in the village of Kommuna. They were covered by river silt deposits.

Oak woodland and hot springs

Near the village of Jalgan lies Petrovskaya Roscha, an oak woodland with both old and young trees. The woodland brings together mature and younger trees. Hot springs described as having healing properties are associated with the settlements of Berekey and Belidji. Thus, alongside its historical sites, Derbent District offers woodland and springs as distinctive landscape features.

More sides of the Republic of Dagestan

In the wider destination of the Republic of Dagestan, the Derbent Citadel offers its own multifaceted view of the region’s history. It contains archaeological remains of a bathhouse, several underground water cisterns, a 5th-century Christian church and an 8th-century mosque. Steep slopes surround the citadel on three sides; its stone walls are 2.5 to 3.2 meters thick, more than 700 meters long and 10 to 15 meters high. Nine of the fortification’s original 14 gates remain.

Beyond the citadel, Derbent’s fortifications and the medieval buildings of the old town, the Magalims, also shape the cultural landscape. The Mountain Wall runs 40 kilometers westward across the mountains, completely blocking the pass between the sea and the mountains. The combination of walls, gates and historic buildings shows fortifications at different scales: individual structures within the citadel, as well as a complex extending across the mountains.

Gunib brings together further historical and landscape features of the Republic of Dagestan. A fortress wall with a round tower and two gates remains; the lower one is called the Baryatinsky Gate, and the upper one the Shamil Gate. A path leads from the Shamil Gates along the three-kilometer-long fortress wall to a tower. The 107-meter-long Gunib Tunnel was cut through rock in the 1860s. For trip planning, these sites offer different perspectives: structures and a described route alongside a historic tunnel.

The Tobot Waterfall offers a different seasonal highlight: it lies at an elevation of 1,690 meters at the head of Tsolotl Canyon on the Khunzakh Plateau. Tobot is one of the highest waterfalls in the North Caucasus; its exact height is unknown, with estimates ranging from 50 to 100 meters. It carries the most water from May to July; in winter, it freezes and turns into a large icicle. The seasons described differ markedly: the strongest water flow from May to July, and a frozen waterfall in winter.

The Sarykum Dune and Karadakh Gorge are also among the natural attractions of the Republic of Dagestan. The Sarykum Dune area is part of the Dagestan Nature Reserve, and not all of the dune is accessible to visitors. Metal walkways lead onto the dune; the hiking trail is called the “Path of the Wise Turtle.” Check the current visitor rules before your trip. Visitors can walk through the unusual rocky corridor of Karadakh Gorge.

When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you are most interested in historical sites, woodland and springs, or the broader cultural and landscape attractions of the Republic of Dagestan. This keeps Derbent District distinct as a destination in its own right, while the additional examples offer a wider view of the Republic of Dagestan.
