Nesterovskiy District: Springs, Forest and Literature
Accommodation in Nesterovskiy District
Spring trails near Krasnolesye, the Rominten Heath and the Literature Museum in Chistye Prudy show different sides of Nesterovskiy District. You will encounter both practical options for an outing in nature and places connected with the history of the poet Kristijonas Donelaitis.
Springs and Culture in Krasnolesye
Two routes to springs start at the edge of Krasnolesye. The short route is about 800 metres long and leads straight to the springs. The longer one is 1.5 kilometres long and passes through the former settlement of Prasberg, with ruins and a lime-tree avenue. The difference is in the route: a short, direct path to the springs or a longer route that also takes in Prasberg. Check the park’s current access rules before visiting.
The Vishtynets Eco-Museum also offers an excursion from the Krasnolesye area to the valley of the Sinjaja River’s springs. It runs during the snow-free season, is for groups of ten or more, and must be booked in advance. The valley has elevation differences of up to 50 metres. The excursion includes the river’s source, the opportunity to drink spring water, and the ruins of the former mill settlement of Prasberg.
The Vishtynets Eco-Museum in Krasnolesye includes the open-air exhibition “Stone Stories”. The museum also invites visitors to walk along forest paths with local residents. Arrange participation in these walks with the museum. In the centre of the village there is also a monument to those who fell in the First World War of 1914–1918. A German inscription is visible on a house that was a shop before the war. Check before visiting whether it can still be seen.
Donelaitis in Chistye Prudy
The Literature Museum in Chistye Prudy, formerly the “Memorial Museum of the Classic of Lithuanian Literature K. Donelaitis”, opened on 11 October 1979 in a restored former Lutheran church building. The poet’s remains were reburied in a specially built crypt.
Kristijonas Donelaitis became pastor of the Lutheran congregation in Tolminkiemis (Chistye Prudy) in November 1743 and remained in the post until his death. He wrote his major work, the poem “The Seasons”, there between 1765 and 1775. The chronology runs from his work as a pastor through the period when the poem was written to the later opening of the museum at this site.
The vicarage displays original household items from the 18th century and copies of historical documents. The exhibition was updated following renovation work carried out between 2019 and 2021. The museum thus focuses both on the memory of Donelaitis and on objects and document copies from the history of the vicarage.
The Rominten Heath: Forest and Historical Traces
The Rominten Heath extends across Nesterovskiy District in Kaliningrad Oblast and Poland’s Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. The Vishtynetsky National Park lies within the heath. The Rominten Heath offers opportunities for walks and cycling, as well as relaxation by the lakes. Check local conditions before setting out.
Historical features of the heath include the foundations of Göring’s former estate and stone bridges dating from the Kingdom of Prussia. Sections of a railway line and a large bridge with a viaduct-like structure have also survived there. These structures and remains give the forest area a historical dimension in addition to its landscape; they are a different focus from the two spring routes in Krasnolesye.
