Steppe, semi-desert and desert shape the landscapes of the Chyornye Zemli State Nature Reserve in the Republic of Kalmykia. Together with its wetlands and routes for observing saigas and birds, they offer a nature experience with several facets to explore.

Landscape and birdlife

The Manych-Gudilo Lake section of the reserve is a wetland of international importance. Rare waterbirds and waders use it as a breeding and wintering area. For nature enthusiasts, this change in function is what makes the seasonal perspective on the area distinctive: it serves not only as a breeding ground, but also as a place to overwinter.

Ecological trails in the reserve

The nature reserve has five excursion trails and routes: “Tropoy Saygaka,” “Ptitsy ozera Manych-Gudilo,” “Tyulpany Manycha,” “Mekletinskiye rozovyye ozera” and “Zverinaya tropa i lebedinoye ozero.” Their names cover a range of themes, from saigas and birds to tulips, lakes and swans.

The “Tropoy Saygaka” route runs through the nature reserve and its protected zone. It is 35 to 60 kilometres long and was developed for observing wild saiga antelopes. Visitors may move around the nature reserve only under the supervision of reserve staff and a guide. For specific planning, check the current visitor arrangements and seasonal availability of the route directly with the reserve.

Tulip route and festival

On the “Tyulpany Manycha” route, after arriving on an island, a walking trail leads past extensive fields of tulips in bloom in a range of colours. This excursion is seasonal; April is the stated period for tulip flowering. The annual tulip festival in Kalmykia offers a special event to plan around. The programme includes Kalmyk dances in traditional costumes, concerts, workshops and performances by historical reenactment groups. Activities range from archery and lasso throwing to camel rides and tastings of local food. Programme details may vary from year to year, so check the event dates and current programme before your trip.

Visitor centre and exhibitions

The nature reserve’s visitor centre showcases present-day and former inhabitants of the Kalmyk steppe, including life-size models of steppe animals. The ethnographic section features arrowheads and work and everyday tools dating from the Neolithic to the late nomadic period. Most of the exhibits were found in the reserve and in federal protected areas. The exhibition programme also includes travelling exhibitions, such as the “Zapovednaya Kalmykiya” photography exhibition and the interactive exhibition “Migratsionnyy put krasnozoboy kazarki.”

Culture in Elista

Elista is home to the Central Khurul “Zolotaya obitel Buddy Shakyamuni,” the largest Buddhist temple in Europe. The National Museum of the Republic of Kalmykia named after N. N. Palmov was also founded in Elista, on 25 March 1921. The temple and museum offer different cultural points of interest to include in your travel plans.

More landscapes and activities in the travel area

In the wider Kalmykia travel area, visitors can try lasso throwing, archery, handling a whip, steering a camel and shearing sheep at the “Adyk” ethnocamp. Check in advance to confirm which activities are currently available. The wider area also includes “Poyushchiye barkhany,” a desert landscape in the middle of the steppe and the first stop on a route. Another route passes through the system of pink Mekletinsky salt lakes; five routes through the steppe can be selected along the Elista River.

When planning your hotel stay, it helps to start by prioritising the purpose of your trip: nature watching and guided visits to the reserve, the seasonal tulip route, or culture in Elista each offer a different focus. The festival is a recurring annual event, with programme details that vary.
