In Kataysky District, unusual landscapes sit alongside a complex history of museums and monasteries. In Kataysk, the local history museum is housed in a historic merchant’s house; in the village of Borovskoye, a monastery museum explores the history of a church and the clergy who served there. Also part of the picture are the long history of the Verkhtechensky Convent and natural areas with birch forest, marshes and a landform on the Sinara shaped by water erosion.

Marshes, forested slopes and erosion

The slopes of Ivanov Kamen are covered in birch forest. Hawthorn, bird cherry, guelder rose and alder buckthorn grow there, while dense stands of ferns and a variety of forest herbs grow below.

Ochoniny Brows is a landform on the Sinara created by water erosion: two converging riverbank scarps form its distinctive shape.

Another type of landscape is the complex of raised bogs. It is divided into three areas: the Mokhovoye bog and Bolshoy Bor and Malyy Bor. These are sphagnum bogs, with stands of bog forms of Scots pine growing in places. The Pyshma bog has botanical significance: it is home to more than 100 species of bog, aquatic, riparian and wet-meadow vascular plants. Rare species listed in the Red Data Book of Kurgan Oblast are a defining feature of the bog complex.

Local History Museum and Monastic History

The Kataysk Local History Museum is housed in the merchant A. I. Petrov’s house, built in 1881. The building is a historical and architectural monument of regional significance. The museum also displays a hoard of 320 copper coins, found in 2008 on the estate of the merchant A. I. Petrov. The history of the house and a precisely documented find from Kataysk are presented side by side.

The monastery museum in the village of Borovskoye was established in 2018 to study the history of the church and preserve the memory of the clergy who served there. Its exhibits include personal belongings of the hieromartyr Arkady Borovsky and old ecclesiastical objects from St. Nicholas Church. The museum thus brings together mementos of a named individual and objects from everyday church life.

The Verkhtechensky Holy Trinity Convent was founded in 1680 by Dalmat of Iset on the bank of the Iset in the village of Verkhnyaya Techa. Until 1764, it was affiliated with Dalmatovsky Monastery for men, followed its monastic rule and was supported by it. The convent’s modern revival began in 1995: by decision of the Holy Synod, it regained the name Svyato-Vvedensky, and monastic life resumed. Its founding and revival mark two distinct periods in its history.

In the wider destination of Kurgan Oblast

The wider destination of Kurgan Oblast offers further distinct cultural and archaeological themes. The Dalmatov Monastery complex was founded in 1644 and is considered the largest stone ensemble and the earliest stone monastery in the Urals and Siberia. The Savin Sanctuary, also known as Trans-Ural Stonehenge, is an ancient observatory dating from the 4th to 3rd millennium BC and a cultural heritage site of federal significance.

At Savin Archaeological Park, life in the Early Iron Age is reconstructed. Visitors learn about people’s way of life and diet, as well as the warfare of the Scythians and Sarmatians; guided tours and workshops are also offered. Check current arrangements before travelling. Kurgan Oblast thus complements local museum and monastic history with its own archaeological perspective.
