Slantsevskiy District: Industrial History, Churches and Springs
Accommodation in Slantsevskiy District
The historical themes of Slantsevskiy District range from the industrial history of Slantsy to churches and religious sites, as well as local traditions. The museum, the churches in Zaruchye and Kozya Gora, and the Pogost Olgin Krest each offer a different perspective: mining, architectural history, religious practice and remembrance.
Mining and everyday life at the museum in Slantsy
At the Slantsevsky History and Local Lore Museum in Slantsy, the exhibition “Zemlya sokhi i lna” displays ethnographic objects from villages and settlements in what is now Slantsevsky District. The exhibition “Vzorvannaya zemlya” explores the industrial development of the area, the construction of mines and factories, and the emergence of the industrial city of Slantsy. A new exhibition opened in April 2025; the specific displays may change over time.
The “Monogorod ot A do Ya” section invites visitors to take a museum quiz: What did miners eat, what was made from shale, and what work did women do in the mines? The topics range from the raw material and the products made from it to everyday life and work in mining. This offers a glimpse of industrial history not only through mines and factories, but also through the people and activities associated with them.
Church history and religious sites in Zaruchye
The stone Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Zaruchye was built between 1858 and 1864 and is considered an important architectural monument. Its historic side altars include those dedicated to the Archangel Michael and Saints Constantine and Helena. The building is currently being restored.
The church’s history of use also includes several interruptions. Services were held from 1864 until the authorities closed the church in 1939; they resumed during the Second World War, from 1942 to 1944. After a long period without maintenance, the church fell into disrepair. Following its return to the faithful, the building was gradually restored by the community. The church welcomes parishioners on feast days. The procession from the church to the Dolozhskaya Cave was revived as a tradition for the Feast of the Dormition.
A complex in Zaruchye includes a chapel, a church house, a pond, a nursery for rare plants, a greenhouse and a farm. The complex thus brings together religious, horticultural, landscape and agricultural elements.
Pogost Olgin Krest and local remembrance
Pogost Olgin Krest is located on the bank of the Narva River. According to the district administration, it is considered the northernmost point of the historic Pskov lands and one of the oldest pogosts in northwestern Russia. A memorial cross marks the site of the church, which no longer survives; local residents pray there to Saint Olga each year.
The district description mentions annual district and regional celebrations in late July, commemorating the founding by Princess Olga in the 10th century. They include folk festivals, historical reenactments, excursions, exhibitions of handicrafts and performances by amateur groups. The area lies in a border zone; documents must be requested in advance.
Church architecture and springs in the district
In Kozya Gora, the Pokrovsky Complex of Porechye includes a five-domed church with side chapels dedicated to Peter and Paul. It was built between 1904 and 1908 to a design by V. A. Kosyakov, is considered well preserved, and is a local visitor attraction. The complex also includes a chapel built between 1905 and 1907, which is still in use.
In the village of Gusyeva Gora, a consecrated spring dedicated to Saint Ilya of Murom is located on the bank of the Rudenka, near the Rudno cultural center. Another local tradition links the Ivanov spring near Kushela to a battle in 1341. Local residents venerate the spring; according to the tradition, the victors washed their wounds there after Pskov warriors under the command of Posadnik Karp Danilovich defeated a detachment of German knights near Lake Kushelskoye. While the dedication is the focus at the spring in Gusyeva Gora, the Ivanov spring is associated with this local remembrance.
