A steep slope drops to the Don with a 50-meter escarpment: Galichya Gora gives Zadonsky District a distinctive landscape feature. In Zadonsk, a historic men’s monastery and guided walks add to the experience; the village of Kamenka is home to the Kudykina Gora Nature and Wonder Park. You can plan your trip around culture, nature, and the tours on offer.

Culture in Zadonsk and Kamenka

The Nativity of the Mother of God Monastery for Men in Zadonsk was founded around 1610 and is a cultural heritage site of regional significance. The “Progulki po staromu gorodu” tour takes you around Zadonsk. During the 7.5-kilometer walk, you’ll gain insights into the lives of different social groups. The walking tour lasts three and a half hours and is suitable for all age groups.

The Kudykina Gora Nature and Wonder Park is located in the village of Kamenka. One of the park’s figures is Zmey Gorynych, created by Vladimir Kolesnikov between 2015 and 2017. Along with the monastery and the walking tour, it offers a contrast between Zadonsk’s cultural history and a named work of art in the park.

Don Landscapes and Nature Reserve

Galichya Gora is a steep slope on the right bank of the Don that drops to the river with a 50-meter escarpment. Morozova Gora is on the left bank. Both areas are forest-steppe landscapes in Zadonsky District. Their names thus refer to two clearly described landscapes on opposite banks of the river.

In the wider destination of Lipetsk Oblast, the Galichya Gora Nature Reserve consists of six separate sections surrounded by developed and agricultural land. It protects characteristic forest-steppe communities as well as groups of rock-dwelling plants on Devonian limestone outcrops in the valleys of the Don, the Bystraya Sosna, and their tributaries. The area was the first nature reserve in the Central Black Earth Region and is one of the world’s smallest nature reserves.
