Republic of Mordovia: Nature Trails and Erzya Culture
Accommodation in Republic of Mordovia
The Republic of Mordovia can be explored through its natural areas, nature trails and cultural heritage. Visitor experiences include forest paths, insights into protected areas and a natural history museum, as well as the traditions of the Erzya people. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on nature and seasonal changes, the attractions of the nature reserve, or culture in Parakino.
The Forest and Seasonal Changes
Smolny National Park was established on March 7, 1995, to protect particularly valuable natural complexes in the coniferous-deciduous forest zone of the Republic of Mordovia. Its southern forest area and the adjacent Alatyr floodplain together form an ornithological area of global importance. The forest and river floodplain are distinct parts of a protected natural area.
The 1.5-kilometer “Forest Work” nature trail runs through pine and deciduous forest. Along the way, it offers information about forest protection and reforestation. This trail is accessible only during the warmer months. The cycling, skiing and hiking route “Phenology of the Russian Forest” offers a different perspective, focusing on seasonal changes in the development of plants and animals. The “Lesnoy Trial” tourist trail in Smolny National Park is also equipped for cycling and skiing excursions.
Nature Trail and Nature Reserve Museum
In Pushhta, near the central administration of the Mordovian Nature Reserve, is the “Get to Know the Mordovian Nature Reserve!” nature trail. Visitors can learn more about typical local flora and fauna, animals and aquatic ecosystems. A special permit is required to access this nature trail, in accordance with visitor regulations.
The nature reserve’s natural history museum offers guided tours for groups and individuals year-round; advance booking is required. At the museum, visitors can interactively listen to animal and bird calls. Also on display is a tree cross-section said to be more than 140 years old. The nature trail and the museum offer different emphases: nature topics in the surroundings of the protected area on the one hand, and the sharing of knowledge and impressions in the museum on the other.
Parakino and Erzya Traditions
The “MASTOR” walking trail was created in Parakino and comprises three ethnographic nature trails. They pass through the picturesque surroundings of the old Mordovian village; the site is intended for use in all seasons. Along the trails are rest areas with gazebos, equipped picnic areas, spaces for traditional Mordovian games, swings and art installations set within the natural landscape. The specific facilities may change.
The “House of Traditions in Parakino” museum and cultural tourism center is one of the town’s attractions. In Parakino, the folklore, traditional clothing, customs, crafts and language of the Erzya people are preserved. The theatrical cycle “Calendar Customs and Us” has become particularly popular. It includes the programs “Laying Out Linen for Indian Summer,” “Pokrov – the Beginning of Winter,” “Kolyada Has Arrived,” “Broad Maslenitsa,” “The First Furrow Festival” and “Trinity – Green Christmastide.” The dates of individual programs may vary.
