Kstovsky District: Puppet Theatre, Folk Culture and History
Accommodation in Kstovsky District
Kstovsky District brings together a rich variety of cultural and historical themes: puppet theatre, folk culture and the “Volga Cinema” exhibition in Kstovo, the Kazan Church in the village of Veliky Vrag, and archaeological sites near Bezvodny.
Culture and events in Kstovo
The puppet theatre in Kstovo began in the 1970s as an amateur puppetry group at the local cultural centre. The theatre’s programme includes performances for children. Its historical origins and children’s programme thus bring together cultural history and stage art for young audiences. If you plan to attend a performance, please check the current schedule.
The Bereginya Folk Culture Centre received the “Soul of Russia” award from the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast in 2021, in the “Best Cultural Institution of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast” category. You can dance folk dances from Nizhny Novgorod Oblast to live music there, including “Svetit mesyats”, “Na rechenku” and “Krakowiak”. Specific programme dates vary; check the dates before making plans.
The “Volga Cinema” exhibition is located at the A. S. Pushkin Central Library in Kstovo. If you plan to include it in your visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
Places and historical perspectives
There is a dry fountain in Lenin Square in Kstovo, illuminated at night. The lighting makes this feature of the public square visible after dark as well.
You can arrange a guided tour of the “Antiquities of the Kstovo Land” exhibition by calling 7-42-82. You must contact them by phone in advance.
The Kazan Church in the village of Veliky Vrag has been a federally significant architectural monument since 1995. The 18 sites of early human settlement discovered near the village of Bezvodny offer a different historical perspective. They date from the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age. While the church represents a protected architectural monument, the archaeological sites reach back to several prehistoric eras.
Culture in the wider destination of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast
The wider destination of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast also offers its own cultural attractions. In Arzamas, the Museum of the Russian Patriarchate explores the lives and work of Patriarchs Nikon and Sergius, as well as Alexius I, Pimen, Alexius II and Kirill. The exhibition displays original objects belonging to the patriarchs alongside modern reconstructions. An overview tour traces the history of the Russian patriarchate from its beginnings to the present day and offers insights into the patriarchs’ lives and spiritual development.
Gorodets is another cultural highlight in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. The historic part of the city is home to a museum quarter. Gorodets has been known since the late 18th century for baking printed gingerbread and building wooden ships. The Gorodets Local History Museum presents exhibitions on the city’s history, Old Believer culture, Orthodoxy, contemporary crafts, crafts from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and merchant life.
