Discover Pokrovsky District: Churches, Memorial Sites and History
Accommodation in Pokrovsky District
Pokrovsky District’s attractions are spread across several places: parks, squares and a church in Pokrovskoye, churches in Alekseyevka and historical connections in Topki. The stops that interest you most may shape your plans for your stay—whether memorial sites, church architecture or literary history.
Attractions and memorial sites
In Pokrovskoye, the E. S. Stroev Park and Victory Square are among the attractions. The Verochkina Glade is also a local attraction. Victory Park contains a mass grave, a Heroes’ Gallery, monuments and a Garden of Remembrance. These features give the park a clear focus on remembrance.
At the level of Pokrovsky District, cultural sites also include the battlefield of the 16th Lithuanian Division, the “Valley of Death” and a mass grave of soldiers from that division. These names draw attention to the history of the war and remembrance of the division.
Churches and historical connections
The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Pokrovskoye was founded in 1999 and opened to parishioners in 2005. If you plan to visit today, it is advisable to check in advance whether visits are possible.
In Alekseyevka, seven kilometers from Stolbetskoye, the Church of Saints Peter, Alexey and Jonah has been preserved. It is considered one of the region’s finest examples of Neoclassical church architecture. Also in Alekseyevka, the Three Hierarchs Church is associated with Prince Alexey Kurakin. Thus, the village brings together a Neoclassical church recognized in the region and another historical point of reference.
On the outskirts of Topki stood the estate of the Russian writer Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev until 1880. He occasionally came there to hunt, alone or with friends. These visits give the place a specific connection to Turgenev’s life.
A suggested route
The “Silver Ring” of Pokrovsky District is described as a suggested tourist route. The idea is for a circular route of around 200 kilometers, starting in the administrative center of Pokrovskoye and following the district’s boundaries. This concept therefore differs from the individual named attractions: it describes a district-wide circular route, not a single place to visit.
More destinations in Oryol Oblast
Oryol Oblast also has destinations of its own. Founded in 1994, Orlovskoye Polesie National Park lies in the northwest of Oryol Oblast and covers 77,745 hectares. The park has more than 80 equipped tourist rest and picnic areas. An enclosed zoo is home to more than 30 species of animals and birds. Information about the facilities and number of species may change.
Another literary connection in Oryol Oblast is the Spasskoye-Lutovinovo Estate. It was the family estate of Ivan Turgenev’s mother in Mtsensk District; the creation of several works, including “Rudin” and “Fathers and Sons,” is associated with the estate. The main house and other buildings are surrounded by an old park laid out by I. I. Lutovinov, founder of the Spasskoye estate, around the turn of the 19th century. You can take a boat ride on Spassky Pond; horse-drawn carriage rides are available in the estate park. Check before your trip whether these rides are currently being offered.
