The literary and memorial museum dedicated to writer A. G. Malyshkin brings together literary artifacts and the history of two historic houses in Mokshan. Mokshansky District is also home to remnants of fortifications, the source of the Moksha River and a sculpture park with more than 300 works. Its themes range from literature and everyday history to architecture and visual art.

Literature and Everyday History at the Malyshkin Museum

The museum is housed in the Malyshkin family’s memorial home and the adjoining former home of watchmaker Novitsky. The exhibition hall is located in this former watchmaker’s house. Through manuscripts, reviews and illustrations, the literary hall explores Malyshkin’s life and work. This brings together various kinds of material: manuscripts, discussion of his work and related illustrations.

The museum’s bakery also broadens the focus beyond literature. It displays household items used by both poor and wealthy peasants. The everyday lives of different social groups are thus a distinct part of the museum’s subject matter. For visitors particularly interested in ways of life and customs, this section offers a different perspective from the manuscripts and reviews in the literary hall.

The bakery also hosts theatrical events, fairs featuring Petrushka, cooking workshops and quest-style guided tours about Russian everyday culture from the 19th to the early 20th century. If you are planning to visit specifically for one of these events, check its availability in advance. The bakery also houses the exhibition “Fair in a County Town.” It refers to Sasha Malyshkin’s first short story, “A Feast in the Field,” which he wrote in 1914 while studying at the University of St. Petersburg. The exhibition and story thus provide a specific literary point of reference within the museum.

Fortress History and the “Watchtower” Complex

The Mokshan earthwork is a 17th-century archaeological and historical monument. It formed part of the Penza defensive line and was also a fragment of Mokshan’s fortress wall from the same period. It therefore offers a way to understand both the history of the region’s defensive line and that of the Mokshan fortifications.

The “Watchtower” complex was restored in 2023. It includes an access area with a parking zone, a scale model of a 17th-century watchtower from the Penza defensive line, and an observation platform with ramps and steps. Individual visitors can climb the watchtower independently during the complex’s opening hours. Check current opening hours before your visit.

The Source of the Moksha and the Observation Pavilion

The source of the Moksha is a sacred spring in Mokshansky District, Penza Oblast. It lies 1.6 kilometers southeast of the village of Vyglyadovka. An observation pavilion stands at the spring, where you can rest and look at the source. This landscape attraction thus offers both a specific location and a place to linger.

Legenda Sculpture Park and Other Cultural Sites

Legenda Sculpture Park is located in Mokshansky District. It features more than 300 works made from a range of materials, including metal, granite, wood and bronze. The park is considered one of the largest sculpture parks in the world and the only one in the Volga region. Its collection offers a different way to explore the district than the literature and history exhibitions, focusing on works in varied materials and their sculptural form.

The district’s historical, cultural and literary sites also include the home of merchant V. P. Bystrenin at 25 Sovetskaya Street. It adds another specific address associated with the area’s cultural heritage to the highlights mentioned above.
