Demyanskiy District: Nature, memorial sites and history
Accommodation in Demyanskiy District
Knyazhna Gora near Peski combines a distinctive landform with a long history of settlement. The hill, about 30 meters high, is a glacial remnant and an archaeological monument of federal significance. From the 6th to the 9th century, the ancient settlement center of Demon na Yavoni was located here. Visitors interested in landscapes and early settlement can find two different ways to explore the district’s history at this site.
Landscape and protected area
In the broader destination of Novgorod Oblast, Valdaysky National Park extends across the Valdaysky, Demyanskiy and Okulovsky districts. It is a large protected area in the European part of Russia. The national park’s largest lake, Lake Velyo, lies 40 kilometers northeast of Demyansk. It has three extensive lake basins as well as numerous bays and islands, and stretches 17 kilometers from north to south.
Museums and history in Demyansk
The Center for the History and Culture of Demyanskiy District is located in Demyansk, in the former home of merchant G. M. Smetanin. The building is an architectural monument from the late 19th century. The “Military History of Demyansk” hall covers the divisions, aviation heroes and partisans who defended Demyansk during the Great Patriotic War; it also contains exhibits from that period.
Other rooms introduce different topics: a hall on peasant life includes household items from the 18th and 19th centuries. The local history hall covers the history of Demyansk and features an exhibition on the manual processing of flax, as well as a collection of birch-bark objects. The center offers group and individual tours, as well as themed tours of the halls. If you plan to take a tour, check the current arrangements before your visit.
Monuments also shape the historical perspective on Demyansk. The monument to the artillerymen of the Northwestern Front consists of a 45 mm Model 1937 anti-tank gun on a tall pedestal. The Northwestern Front memorial complex symbolizes the Demyansk Pocket and the subsequent bridgehead, over which the front’s troops fought heavy battles for a year and a half. A stone chapel in Demyansk was built in 1884 in memory of Alexander II.
Memorial sites in Lychkovo
A monument to the children who died during the Great Patriotic War was solemnly unveiled in front of Lychkovo railway station in 2005, on the 60th anniversary of Victory. Another monument in Lychkovo commemorates the soldiers of the 245th Rifle Division of the 11th Army of the Northwestern Front: they liberated the settlement from German occupation forces on February 20, 1943. Two excursion routes lead to the district’s best-known military memorial sites: Demyansk–Lychkovo and Demyansk–Tsemena–Korpovo.
The Center for the Study of the History of the Village of Lychkovo preserves the memory of the village’s wartime history and of the children from Leningrad who died on July 18, 1941, when a train was bombed at Lychkovo railway station. The memorial sites and the center each provide a distinct point of reference for the history of the place.
Wrassky’s legacy in Nikolskoye
In Nikolskoye, the Center for the Study of V. P. Wrassky’s Legacy is dedicated to ichthyologist and local nobleman Vladimir Pavlovich Wrassky, founder of Russia’s first fish-breeding facility. The materials on display cover his family history and biography, his work on artificial fish breeding, and the founding and subsequent history of the facility. Alongside military history, the development of fish breeding is therefore another focus of a visit to Demyanskiy District.
