The ensemble of the Vyazhishchi Monastery in Novgorodsky District was founded more than 600 years ago. The monastery is an active convent; it also houses relic fragments of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Those interested in religious heritage will find both a foundation dating back a long way and a specific reference to relics.

Monasteries and Architectural History

The complex of the Holy Trinity Michael Klopsky Monastery dates back to the 15th century. At its center is the four-pillar, three-domed Trinity Cathedral, built in the 1560s. Picturesque side chapels and galleries with a bell tower were added later; these additions have not survived. The chronology distinguishes the cathedral from the later additions, making both its described architectural form and the lost extensions distinct aspects of the monastery’s history.

The monastery’s principal relics are those of St. Michael of Klopsky. They rest beneath the floor on the south side of the Trinity Church. Compared with the Vyazhishchi Monastery, which preserves relic fragments of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, this reflects a different religious connection: at Klopsky, the principal relics are precisely located within the church.

On museum days, the Novgorod Museum Reserve offers a guided tour of the Holy Trinity Michael Klopsky Monastery by prior arrangement. If you plan to take this tour, take the museum days into account and book in advance.

Other Natural and Cultural Attractions in Novgorod Oblast

Beyond the local focus on monasteries, Novgorod Oblast offers a broader landscape. Valdai National Park covers 159,100 hectares and extends across the Valdaysky, Demyansky, and Okulovsky districts. This regional context offers a different perspective from the monastic history of Novgorodsky District.

Mount Ryzhocha is the highest point in Valdai National Park. A 25-meter-high observation tower stands on the mountain, offering views of the taiga, Lake Veljo, and other bodies of water. The focus here is on the view from an elevated vantage point. The circular trail in the Bor area offers a different nature experience: it passes through typical taiga forests on hilly terrain and through diverse marshes in the hollows between the hills.

In Valday, the Bell Museum Center combines a collection with a hands-on visitor activity. It displays bells from around the world, ranging from their forms in the 3rd century BC and the Middle Ages to modern souvenir bells. Staff demonstrate bell-ringing techniques and allow visitors to try them out themselves. According to the tourism description, it is the only museum in Russia to bring together bells from around the world.

The exhibition at the District Town Museum, which opened in 1998, presents other aspects of Valday. It covers the daily lives of the town’s residents, the development of local crafts, and the lives of individual Valday families and well-known summer visitors. A monument titled “To the Blacksmiths and Bell Makers of Valday” was also erected in Valday in 2017. Thus, alongside natural attractions, the broader travel destination of Novgorod Oblast also offers bell history, town life, and craftsmanship.

When planning your hotel and trip, you can distinguish between the different focuses: the monasteries define the religious heritage of Novgorodsky District described here, while natural and cultural attractions such as Valdai National Park and the museums in Valday belong to the wider context of Novgorod Oblast.
