Perm Region: Nature, Winter Sports and Culture
Accommodation in Perm Region
Perm Region offers a range of reasons to travel: a seasonal excursion in Basegi Nature Reserve, the Gubakha year-round resort on Mount Krestovaya, and Khokhlovka, an open-air museum of wooden architecture. When planning your trip, it is useful to understand the differences between these highlights. For the route, the season and time required matter; in Gubakha, the focus is on the slopes, while Khokhlovka offers a cultural and historical dimension. This makes it easier to choose activities that suit what matters to you on your trip.
Excursions in Basegi Nature Reserve
Basegi Nature Reserve offers the “To the Summit of Northern Baseg” excursion route. It is 11 km long, and the total time, including the guided tour and rest, is five to eight hours. Plan for the full five to eight hours, as this estimate includes the guided tour and rest. The route starts at the checkpoint at the Schastlivy ranger station. It includes 3,700 meters on foot through taiga forest (the mountain forest zone), as well as about 300 meters across mountain meadows. The excursion season runs from June to October; coordinate arrangements with the reserve before your trip. The reserve also offers the “To the Summit of Southern Baseg” excursion route.
Visitor center and regional nature
The nature reserve’s visitor center is located in the administrative building. It features a small museum exhibition on the flora and fauna of Perm Region. Environmental education discussions, lectures, quizzes and games are held there regularly. For nature enthusiasts, the experiences differ: the route passes through named forest and meadow sections, while the visitor center focuses on an exhibition and recurring educational programs. When choosing activities, you can weigh up following an excursion route against learning about regional nature.
Gubakha: slopes on Mount Krestovaya
The Gubakha year-round resort is located on Mount Krestovaya in the city of Gubakha, Perm Region. It has seven groomed slopes. There are also eleven freeride runs; this number may change, so check the latest information when planning your trip. The seven groomed slopes and eleven freeride runs refer to different categories and are not directly comparable totals. This distinction helps you assess each offering based on what you are looking for, rather than treating both figures as equivalent measures.
Wooden architecture in Khokhlovka
Khokhlovka is the Urals’ first open-air architectural and ethnographic museum of wooden architecture. Its focus on wooden architecture sets this cultural experience apart from the excursion in Basegi and the slopes in Gubakha. If you would like to include a cultural theme in your travel plans alongside nature experiences and winter sports, Khokhlovka offers a distinct option.
Weighing up travel dates and priorities
The offerings also differ in terms of timing: the Northern Baseg route is available from June to October, while Gubakha is a year-round resort. These are different types of timeframes: one applies to a specific excursion route, the other to the resort’s year-round offering. When planning, it is therefore worth considering your travel dates separately from your preferred activity—excursions, slopes and wooden architecture each offer a different focus.
