The Republic of North Ossetia offers a variety of reasons to visit: routes through gorges, views of glaciers and waterfalls sit alongside historic sites and traces of Ossetian history. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the specific destinations and their distinctive features. Some routes are defined by their course and elevation, while other places are distinguished by a particular landscape or historical significance.

Gorges, Routes and Wildlife Viewing

The route to the Shalagom viewpoint begins in the village of Kharisdzhin, passes through the Khilak Gorge and reaches the Shalagom tract. On the left slope of the gorge, the North Ossetian Nature Reserve is home to the largest local population of endemic East Caucasian tur, possibly the largest in all of North Ossetia. From the Shalagom viewpoint, the animals can be observed in their natural habitat in the subalpine and alpine elevations of the Bokovoy Range. However, sightings are not guaranteed.

The route to the Shagatsikomdon Waterfall follows the left terrace of the Tseydon River. It passes through a pine forest with Oriental beech, Trautvetter’s maple and gray alder, growing on brown mountain-forest soils with podzolic features. The route climbs steeply over an outcrop of gray granite, then descends to the riverbank and leads hikers to the lower waterfall cascade. The forest, rock and riverbank are all useful landmarks for understanding the character of this route.

Elevation can also help with orientation: the route to the Tseysky Glacier begins in a large meadow on the steep left bank of the Tseydon River at an altitude of 1,958 meters. There is a designated rest area in a clearing at the entrance to the debris-flow barrier.

Glaciers and Alpine Landscapes

The moraine offers a view of the Karaugom Glacier, the largest glacier in North Ossetia. Its icefall reaches a height of up to 800 meters. The Tseysky Glacier, by contrast, is notable as the second-largest glacier in North Ossetia. It is also considered one of the most beautiful and accessible glaciers in the Caucasus. The two descriptions offer different points of reference: for the Karaugom Glacier, the view from the moraine and the towering icefall; for the Tseysky Glacier, its ranking in the region and the described route starting at 1,958 meters.

Waterfalls and Natural Landmarks

Galdoridon is a five-tiered waterfall more than 30 meters high and a natural attraction in Alania National Park. The circular route begins on the left terrace of the Khareseidon River, passes through the beginning of the Khares Gorge to the waterfall, and runs at elevations of 1,800 to 2,200 meters above sea level. Seasonal conditions may vary. By comparison, the route to Shagatsikomdon Waterfall is defined by its course over gray granite, down to the riverbank and on to the lower cascade.

Chifandzar is a raised bog of lacustrine origin—that is, formed from a lake—and a natural landmark in Alania National Park. It adds a different type of natural landscape to the waterfalls and glaciers. Travelers wishing to include a range of landscape types in their plans will find, alongside the routes and waterfalls described here, a raised bog as a destination in its own right.

Cultural History in Dargavs and at the Khilak Wall

The Darghavs necropolis complex is located in the old village of Dargavs, in the valley of the same name, 42 kilometers from Vladikavkaz. This cultural monument of federal significance comprises 95 burial vaults of various types. They date from the 14th century to the first third of the 19th century. Since 1978, the complex has been a branch of the National Museum of the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania.

The complex’s architecture and burial customs reflect the socioeconomic conditions and religious beliefs of the Ossetian population in the late Middle Ages. Dargavs can therefore be understood not only in terms of the number and different types of burial vaults, but also through the historical significance attributed to its architecture and customs.

Another historical subject is the Khilak (Gutievskaya) defensive wall. According to scholars, it was built between the 5th and 8th centuries AD. The date is therefore explicitly a scholarly estimate.
