Rybno-Slobodskiy District: Museum, Handicrafts and Nature
Accommodation in Rybno-Slobodskiy District
Archaeological finds, bobbin lace-making and protected woodland offer different ways to explore the history and landscape of Rybno-Slobodskiy District. In Rybnaia Sloboda, the collections of the local history museum take centre stage, while protected areas and natural monuments add a distinctive landscape element. You can also take part in workshops where you can try traditional crafts for yourself, as well as go fishing in Rybnaia Sloboda. Depending on whether you are more interested in the museum, handicrafts or nature, you can tailor your trip accordingly.
Local History Museum and Local Culture
The Rybno-Slobodsky Local History Museum displays finds from excavations at the Challyn settlement, dating from the 12th to the 16th century. Collections on fishing, jewellery-making and lace-making showcase activities for which Rybnaia Sloboda was once known. The ethnographic section features the clothing, everyday life and culture of Tatars, Russians and Kryashens. Archaeological finds, references to handicrafts and ethnographic topics sit side by side, bringing the museum’s different areas of focus to life.
Try Bobbin Lace-Making for Yourself
Bobbin lace-making lets you move from viewing collections to trying the craft yourself. Visitors to the district can take part in special workshops and, with guidance from a master craftsperson, make a protective doll to take home as a souvenir. Check whether workshops are currently available before your trip. Anyone who wants a hands-on introduction to handicrafts will find this a different experience from exploring the exhibitions and collections.
Protected Areas and Woodland
The Shumbut Nature Reserve covers 12,500 hectares and was established in 1963 to restore the beaver population. The Dikaya Ferma Eco-Park is located within the reserve. Visitors to the park can see sika deer and red deer, which are considered rare in Tatarstan. Before making plans, check whether a visit is currently possible and in what form.
In the southeast of the district, the natural monument “Lesnye kultury listvennitsy 1906 goda” covers 27.4 hectares. It includes old planted stands of Siberian larch, Scots pine and Norway spruce. The western woodland areas of the Bersutskie pihtarniki natural monument cover 174.3 hectares within the district and are home to fir and deciduous mixed forests. The areas can therefore be compared by their different features: on the one hand, planted stands with three named tree species; on the other, a fir and deciduous mixed forest and the larger western woodland area.
Fishing in Rybnaia Sloboda
Those interested can go fishing in Rybnaia Sloboda; a landing stage is a five-minute walk from the settlement centre. The stage gives you a specific point of reference when planning this activity. Before fishing, find out about current access conditions.
