Kasharsky District: Discover Natural Monuments
Accommodation in Kasharsky District
Five natural monuments give Kasharsky District a distinctive natural profile: Lipyagi, Rogovskoye, Shirokoye i Zhukovo, Peschano-Tserkovnoye, and Orekhovoye. They range in size from 66 to 837 hectares, and each has its own geographical context. For an initial overview, it is useful to consider size and location separately. This makes it clear whether a natural monument is located in relation to a settlement, a compass direction, or a stretch of river. Lipyagi is notable for its variety of vegetation types, while Rogovskoye is defined by its riverside location.
Comparing Areas
The largest of the five natural monuments is Lipyagi, at 837 hectares. At the other end of the range is Peschano-Tserkovnoye, at 66 hectares, making Lipyagi more than twelve times as large. Rogovskoye covers 386 hectares. Orekhovoye covers 267 hectares, and Shirokoye i Zhukovo covers 254 hectares. These two areas are close in size, with a difference of 13 hectares. At 386 hectares, Rogovskoye is larger than both, but remains considerably smaller than Lipyagi.
Lipyagi: Vegetation and Location
Lipyagi is about more than just forest. The natural monument includes planted forests and fragments of natural oak groves, as well as steppe and meadow vegetation. The two types of woodland are clearly distinct: the forests are planted, while the oak groves are natural fragments. Lipyagi is also a habitat for species listed in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation. Those interested in varied vegetation and the habitats of such species will find Lipyagi a distinctive natural attraction.
Precision is also useful when it comes to the name: the Lipyagi natural monument lies west of the hamlet of Olkhovy and north of the hamlet of Lipyagi. The same name thus refers both to the natural monument and to a hamlet; each location description gives a different point of reference. For orientation, it is important not to conflate the natural monument with the hamlet.
Rivers and Settlements as Points of Reference
Rogovskoye lies between Sarinovka and Mikhaylovka, on both banks of the Bolshaya River up to its confluence with the Nagolnaya River. Here, the location is described not only in relation to two settlements, but also by a named stretch of river and its endpoint at the confluence. This provides a different kind of orientation from the concise compass-direction descriptions used for the other natural monuments. When locating the place names on a map, you can therefore use the confluence as a point of reference in addition to Sarinovka and Mikhaylovka.
Shirokoye i Zhukovo lies northwest of Novopavlovka, while Peschano-Tserkovnoye lies west of the same settlement. Having the same point of reference makes them easy to compare: the two natural monuments are not in the same direction, but lie northwest and west of Novopavlovka, respectively. Orekhovoye, in turn, is located west of Kashary. When reading these location descriptions, it is important to note which settlement is named; a location west of Kashary is not the same as one west of Novopavlovka.
