You can explore the cultural history of Myasnikovskiy District through a range of sites: the open-air exhibition at the Tanais settlement showcases ancient urban areas, while the museum and church in Chaltyr focus on Armenian history and architecture. Kalinin is home to the history of Don River fishing; in Petrovka, a church stands beside the Babinsky Spring. These places offer different themes to consider when planning your trip.

Ancient settlement and historical techniques at Tanais

The open-air exhibition at the Tanais settlement covers excavations with a total area of 13,787 m². The remains include the Western City Quarter, which dates from the 3rd century BC to the turn of the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. The citadel dates from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD. These date ranges highlight different periods within the archaeological exhibition.

On the excursion route through the open-air exhibition, visitors see fortifications and excavated city quarters with courtyards, streets, and lanes. The tour also includes a reconstruction of a house from Tanais and traces of the settlement that once stood here. If you are interested in the layout of an ancient settlement, you can see a range of architectural features side by side: fortifications, residential areas, paths, and a reconstructed house.

The Tanais Museum-Reserve offers interactive historical practice programs on ancient crafts, writing, trade, and sports techniques. Alongside the archaeological remains, the program also explores the practical side of historical activities. The “Day of Tanais” theatrical event is also held there every year. The exhibition, practice programs, and theatrical event offer different ways to explore the history of the settlement during your stay.

Chaltyr: Armenian history and architecture

The Historical and Ethnographic Museum of Myasnikovsky District in Chaltyr has a permanent exhibition about the resettlement of Armenians from Crimea to the Don and Armenian life in the Don region. The collection includes old household items, tools, and handicrafts from the late 18th to the early 20th century. Chaltyr thus offers a look at both the history of the resettlement and objects from various aspects of everyday life and crafts.

The museum’s program includes folk festivals featuring performances by folk groups. National dishes and pies such as “puri samsa” and “lapataev bida” are baked at these events. The festivals bring together stage performances and culinary traditions; check with the museum for specific dates before your visit. Another way to explore Chaltyr is to take Bus Excursion Route 7, “Traditions of the Don Armenians,” to the village. If you plan to take this excursion, check the current departure times in advance.

The Surb Hambartsum Church is also among Chaltyr’s cultural history sites. It was founded in 1790; the building that survives today was constructed in 1869 in the Neoclassical style, based on a standard design by Taganrog architect N. Muratov. Beside the church stands a carved stone cross, a khachkar, commemorating the 1915 Armenian Genocide. The church’s founding, construction history, and memorial cross each offer a distinct historical point of reference.

Churches and Don River fishing in Petrovka and Kalinin

In Petrovka, the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Life-Giving Spring” was built between 1850 and 1858 beside the Babinsky Spring. Its location links the church directly to the neighboring spring. In Kalinin, by contrast, the “Donskaya ryba” Museum focuses on the history of Don River fishing, its traditions, and Cossack customs.

Visitors to the “Donskaya ryba” Museum can also take part in a workshop where they paint a “dream fish.” Contact the museum in advance to ask about current workshop options. The district brings together a range of cultural themes: archaeological settlement remains and historical techniques at Tanais, Armenian history and architecture in Chaltyr, and fishing traditions in Kalinin.

When planning your hotel stay, you can start by deciding which of these themes is most important for your trip. If you are particularly interested in ancient settlements, Tanais offers several different points of interest. If you are interested in Armenian history, collection items, and religious architecture, Chaltyr offers a different focus; if you are interested in Don River fishing and its traditions, Kalinin is the place to explore them.
