Dyakovsky Forest: Nature in Krasnokutsky District
Dyakovsky Forest, a national park of federal importance, is located in Krasnokutsky District of Saratov Oblast. The forest’s protection history includes a regional decision made in 2007: the government of Saratov Oblast declared it a natural monument and added it to the oblast’s list of specially protected natural areas. This means that two designations apply here: federal national park status and regional classification as a natural monument.
An ecological trail is open in the national park. Among other things, guided tours along it visit a giant oak and a spring. These two destinations offer concrete starting points for exploring nature: you can plan your visit around a distinctive oak or a spring. If you plan to follow the trail or join a guided tour, check the current operating conditions in advance.

The Park of the Conquerors of Space named after Yuri Gagarin has designated routes for walking and cycling. The Khvalynsky National Park is home to an animal rehabilitation center. The center houses rare species listed in the Red Book of Saratov Oblast. Animals you can see there include camels, deer, roe deer, wild boar, eagles, and golden pheasants. These two examples cater to different travel interests: designated routes for walking or cycling on the one hand, and wildlife watching on the other.
Volsk: History and Architecture in Saratov Oblast
Volsk’s history dates back to the late 17th century, when the village of Malykovka stood on the site. In 1780, a decree by Catherine II made the village the district town of Volgsk (Volsk), later known as Volsk. The succession of names from Malykovka to Volgsk to Volsk reflects different stages in the town’s history.
A plan called for a regular street grid in Volsk, with rectangular blocks characteristic of St. Petersburg. Some buildings from the early 19th century, as well as entire architectural ensembles, have been preserved in the central square. Volsk is the only town in Saratov Oblast with the status of a historical settlement of federal importance.
A total of 120 stone mansions were built in Volsk, many of which have survived to this day. Volsk’s Gostiny Dvor, the former trading arcades, features an impressive colonnade extending along an entire block.
The Cathedral of the Life-Giving Trinity, Volsk’s main church, was built in 2009 on the site of the Trinity Cathedral, which was destroyed in 1934.
Children’s Art School No. 1 is housed in the former public library, which was named after Emperor Alexander II. The building was constructed in 1898 to commemorate the victory in the War of 1812. Volsk’s waterfront promenade features a monument to Soviet statesman K. E. Voroshilov, a stele bearing the city’s founding date, and a monument to the sailors and fighters of the Volsk Red Flotilla.
A workshop in Volsk offers another activity: you can buy Volsk ceramics with an incised pattern and take a toy-painting class. Check the class’s current availability before your visit.
