Leninskiy District: Bogucharovo and its architectural history
Accommodation in Leninskiy District
The Bogucharovo estate is a cultural and historical landmark in Leninskiy District. Its ensemble was included in the list of cultural and historical monuments of federal significance by Decree No. 176 of the President of the Russian Federation dated February 20, 1995. Monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved there; the ensemble also has architectural and artistic value. For travelers interested in historic architecture, a particular way to appreciate the site is to view its individual buildings and their different construction periods as parts of a single ensemble.
Architecture from several periods
The manor house dates from the late 18th century, while the wings date from the second half of the 19th century. The ensemble also includes a bell tower built in 1894 and the active Church of the Presentation of the Lord, built in 1841 to a design by A. S. Khomyakov. The construction periods therefore span the late 18th to the late 19th century. The wings and church represent different points in time within the 19th century. The architectural history can thus be traced through individual, comparable dates.
Tours of the estate
The A. S. Khomyakov Museum offers tours of the grounds and exhibition. If you plan to include a tour in your itinerary, check the museum's current visitor information in advance.
More cultural highlights in the wider destination of Tula Oblast
In the wider destination of Tula Oblast, two exhibitions at the museum in Tula explore different themes. One exhibition focuses on the Battle of Kulikovo. In the interactive areas, visitors can weave a piece of chain mail, try on armor and learn how to read chronicle miniatures. Another exhibition about Tula crafts features a pottery workshop, a blacksmith's workshop and household items from the 17th to 19th centuries. The museum thus offers a range of themes, from the history of battles and craftsmanship to everyday objects from several centuries.
At the Yasnaya Polyana Museum-Estate, a guided walk through the central part of the estate is scheduled from May to October. The walk covers Tolstoy's favorite places for daily strolls, the local flora and fauna, and the history of the Tula defensive lines and Tolstoy's plantings. The guided tour brings together nature, Tolstoy's world and regional history.
A different approach to architecture can be seen at the Polenovo estate in Tula Oblast: the artist Vasily Polenov designed all the buildings himself. While Bogucharovo can be understood through the different construction periods of its buildings, Polenovo centers on the work of a single artist.
