The Church of St. Nicholas in Krapivna and the Yasnaya Polyana estate offer different highlights for a trip to Shchekinskiy District: protected architectural heritage in one place, and a museum estate that is also a nature reserve in the other. Further points of interest range from a local history museum that can be explored by touch to guided tours. This makes it possible to plan a stay around local history, connections to Tolstoy, and nature.

Krapivna: Architectural History and Everyday Culture

The Church of St. Nicholas stands in Krapivna’s central square; it was built between 1759 and 1764. The protected monument also includes two gatehouses dating from the mid-19th century. Krapivna itself is listed as a cultural heritage site under the name “County Town of Krapivna.” Another protected building is the former police office with treasury at 40 Kommunarov Street. It dates from the 1830s and is classified as a Category F architectural monument.

The “Peasant Life” exhibition at the Krapivna Local History Museum offers another perspective on the town. Visitors can explore its exhibits by touch. They include Filimonovo toys, lace, and handwoven towels as historical objects from peasant life, as well as tableware and furniture from the merchant community. The exhibition brings different aspects of everyday life together and complements the architectural history with collection objects that can also be explored through the sense of touch.

Yasnaya Polyana: Estate, Museum, and Nature

Yasnaya Polyana is a museum and nature reserve. The estate grounds include memorial sites, parks, apple orchards, a greenhouse, and woodland and open-land areas. Gardens and parks are part of the visitor experience; the natural features have been carefully preserved and restored for many years. In favorable weather, the grounds are accessible to people with disabilities in all categories. You can take this weather condition into account when planning your visit.

The 19th-century Tolstoy estate at Yasnaya Polyana is listed as protected cultural heritage in the settlement. Leo Tolstoy’s grave there is also listed as protected cultural heritage. The guided tour “Steps into Nature” offers a distinct way to explore the grounds: it passes through the central part of the estate and includes Leo Tolstoy’s favorite places for his daily walks, as well as the local flora and fauna. The tour thus links the places where Tolstoy walked with the plants and animals of the surrounding area.

Further Historical Connections and Tours

The “Maloye Pirogovo” tour introduces the history of a Tolstoy estate associated with events in the lives of Leo Tolstoy’s sister, Maria Nikolaevna, and his daughter, Maria Lvovna. The focus therefore extends beyond Leo Tolstoy himself to include family history. Other protected cultural heritage sites include the Maloye Pirogovo estate of M. N. Tolstaya and the Bolshoye Pirogovo estate of S. N. Tolstoy. They are associated with the settlements of Pirogovo-2 and Pirogovo-1, respectively; Bolshoye Pirogovo dates from the late 18th to early 19th century.

From June to August, a guided tour of Krapivna’s historic center is offered and is also intended for wheelchair users. Check the specific dates before your visit. This seasonal tour is another possible focus alongside the historic buildings and exhibitions.
