Tver Oblast: Raised Bogs, Forests and Monastic Culture
Accommodation in Tver Oblast
A raised bog with open, moss-covered areas, hikes through taiga forest and the history of a monastery on an island offer very different reasons to visit Tver Oblast. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in the region, you can first decide what to focus on during your trip: nature in the Central Forest Reserve, historic sites in Torzhok or religious history at Nilova Pustyn. This way, you can start planning around the experiences that interest you.
Nature Trails and a Raised Bog
Guided tours are offered on the “Tajny Okovskogo lesa” and “Lesnaya azbuka” ecological trails in the Central Forest Reserve. The “Boloto Staroselskiy mokh” nature trail passes through a picturesque raised bog with wide-open areas entirely covered in moss and unusual plants. The nature experiences here therefore include both guided trails and a specific bog landscape with its distinctive plants.
An excursion to the “Staroselskiy mokh” raised bog is also part of the Central Forest Reserve. Visitors use their own vehicle for this excursion. If you include it in your stay, plan to use your own vehicle as part of the experience.
The hike to the “Barsuchikha” forest outpost can also be planned around the time available: it is offered as either a day trip or a tour with an overnight stay in a forest cabin. Along the way, you will see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. The hike therefore offers a choice between a day trip and an overnight option, with the landscape along the trail as a shared feature of both.
Torzhok: Archaeology, Monasteries and Festivals
In the historic center of Torzhok is Verkhneye gorodishche, an archaeological site of federal significance and a tourist attraction. Another historic site in the city is Novotorzhskiy Borisoglebskiy Monastyr. Founded in 1038, the monastery is one of the oldest Orthodox monasteries in Russia. Torzhok thus brings together an archaeological site and a long monastic tradition as distinct cultural attractions.
Nilova Pustyn Monastery, a center of religious and pilgrimage tourism, is located on Stolobny Island. For those interested in religious destinations, it offers another regional point of interest alongside Torzhok’s monastic history. The “Blin s Pripyokom” and “Kuzminki v Torzhke” festivals are held annually at Novotorzhskiy Kremlin. If you are considering making one of the festivals the occasion for your trip, check the dates for your intended travel year in advance.
Nature Museum and Visitor Center
The Central Forest Reserve Nature Museum opened at the reserve’s central estate on September 24, 2015. Its exhibits showcase the protected area’s main ecosystems and interesting species that live there; one room is devoted to scientific research. Here, nature and research come together in a different way than they do on the trails and excursions to the bog.
There is also a visitor center on the grounds of the central estate. It provides information about the organization’s history and structure, hosts a regular exhibition of children’s artwork and has a souvenir shop. Together with the Nature Museum, it offers a distinct focus for visitors who want to learn about the protected area’s organization and research as well as its landscapes.
When planning a trip to Tver Oblast, it helps to distinguish the offerings by their character: the Central Forest Reserve is known for its bog, forest trails and nature interpretation; Torzhok offers archaeological and monastic attractions as well as annual festivals; and Nilova Pustyn is associated with religious and pilgrimage tourism. Choose which of these sides of the region you would like to shape your stay.
