Kovrovsky District: Manor History and Starodub
Accommodation in Kovrovsky District
A wooden manor house, a stone church and an equally old park define the Taneev family estate ensemble in Marinino. In Kovrovsky District, this manor history, museums on the history of Starodub and exhibitions about regional merchants offer different historical perspectives.
The Taneev Estate in Marinino
The main wooden manor house is a remarkable example of provincial manor architecture from the second half of the 18th century. The ensemble also includes a stone church dedicated to the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos. The Taneevs had it built in 1808. The manor park is as old as the house. Together, the manor house, church and park form the defining elements of the ensemble, offering different points of interest for your visit, from architecture and construction history to the development of an estate.
A series of festival events is held at the estate throughout the year; it is best to check specific dates before your trip. The offerings also include “Mir zabytoy muzyki” (“World of Forgotten Music”): the program introduces visitors to so-called forgotten musical instruments. Visitors can listen to the instruments and play them themselves in a workshop. In the “Marininskaya igra” (“Marinino Game”) project, they learn about old games of the nobility and folk games, including Biryulki, Serco, croquet and Gorodki. Check with the venue for the current availability of these programs.
Starodub’s History at the Museum
The “Starodub na Klyazme” museum opened in August 2022 in the village of Klyazminsky Gorodok, at the site where the city of Starodub once stood. The exhibition “Na drevney zemle Staroduba” explores the history of the ancient city. Starodub was founded in 1152 by Grand Prince Yuri Vladimirovich Dolgoruky as a border fortress on a high plateau on the right bank of the Klyazma. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the city’s heyday, Starodub was the capital of the principality of the same name.
The second exhibition is devoted to the history of the village of Klyazminsky Gorodok and its former owners, the princes Volkonsky. The diorama “Rybnaya lavka” (“Fish Shop”) is part of this exhibition. The exhibition themes thus take visitors from the history of the medieval city to the history of the village and its owners.
Hands-on activities are also part of the museum experience: visitors can try on replicas of chain mail, plate armor, helmets, padded undercaps and padded coifs in the exhibition. The museum also invites visitors to take part in the interactive museum education program “Monetnaya masterskaya Drevnego Staroduba” (“Coin Workshop of Ancient Starodub”). If you would like to include this activity in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently being offered.
Museum Sites in Pavlovskoye and Melekhovo
The “Usadba dvukh generalov” (“Estate of Two Generals”) museum is located in the village of Pavlovskoye. It is an organizational unit of the Kovrovsky District Historical and Local History Museum. Pavlovskoye, the historical homeland of the princes Pozharsky, has another special connection to the history of the museum: a museum installation in the form of a medieval fortress was created there, with three timber-built wooden towers, a palisade and a gate.
In Melekhovo, the Kovrovsky District Historical and Local History Museum has a permanent exhibition about the Ofeni. These itinerant merchants are linked to the district’s commercial history; the exhibition opened in 2018. During a themed tour, you can also learn about the merchants’ artificial language. Alongside the permanent exhibition, the museum thus offers a special way to explore this topic.
