Sobinsky District: Lakes, Literature and Historic Estates
Accommodation in Sobinsky District
Travel interests in Sobinsky District range from bird migration at the lakes to readings and museum programs in Alepino, as well as the history of estates and museums in Cherkutino and Orekhovo. When planning your hotel stay, you can first decide whether nature, literature, or historic sites will be the main focus of your trip.
Lakes, wetlands and bird migration
Lake Isikhra is a natural monument and a remnant of an ancient glacial lake that has not become marshland. The Aserkhovo peat bog formed where the former lake once stood. During bird migration, waterbirds and waders, including ducks, geese and other waders, rest at the lake; rare species include the osprey, white-tailed eagle and whooper swan. The birds present may vary by season and year.
Forest Lake Suekhra has a different origin: it formed as an oxbow of the Klyazma River and has long been disconnected from the river. People swim and fish in the lake in summer. There are several fire pits and designated rest areas along its shores. Check the current rules of the protected area when visiting.
Alepino: readings and museum programs
The traditional Soloukhin readings have been held in Alepino since 1998. Their program includes literary discussions, exhibitions, concerts and workshops. The V. A. Soloukhin Museum and Exhibition Center is dedicated to the writer’s life and work; it opened to visitors in 2021. Check the current dates for the readings before your trip.
Reading competitions are held in the salon on the second floor of the Soloukhin Museum, and visitors can play a historic grand piano. The museum also hosts the annual “Pancake Art” cooking competition: you can take part or attend as a guest. Ask the museum about the current program and the next date.
Other activities mentioned in Alepino include the “Pets” program and horseback rides on the museum grounds. At the museum, visitors can meet the resident mares Busya and Marya, the horse Malysh and the donkey Kuzya; the animals mentioned may change over time. A candle-making workshop is for adults and children, who can make scented candles or candles from beeswax sheets. Ask the museum about current availability and booking arrangements. A guided tour of the Soloukhin Museum continues with a walk through Alepino to the writer’s parents’ home; check tour arrangements with the museum in advance.
Cherkutino: the Speransky Museum
The Mikhail Speransky Museum is housed in the former priest’s house in Cherkutino. Its exhibits include copies of documents about the reformer’s life, his principal work—the Collection of Laws of the Russian Empire—and everyday objects from that period. The museum offers tours and various events for adults and children; check current availability before your trip.
One museum program uses a VR headset and app to offer a virtual tour of Cherkutino’s historic center as it was in the early 19th century. Visitors see Prince Nikolai Saltykov’s estate, the village churches and the present-day museum building. It is also advisable to ask about the current availability of this activity. The Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God, built in 1801, no longer survives; its bell tower and the former priest’s house can still be seen.
Orekhovo: Zhukovsky and the historic estate
The N. E. Zhukovsky Estate Museum is in the village of Orekhovo. It is dedicated to Zhukovsky’s life and scientific work, as well as the development of aviation and space exploration. A Zhukovsky museum has been on the estate since 1937. Its eleven rooms comprise seven rooms in the memorial complex and four devoted to his scientific legacy. Themed tours cover Zhukovsky’s life and work, the history of aviation and space exploration, and the history of the family estate. Check the current availability of tours before your visit.
The historic estate complex of the Zhukovsky family included a simple, plastered wooden house, wings, greenhouses, stables, a linden park and a birch-lined driveway. An extension with a balcony and terrace was added to the west façade of the manor house in 1911–1912. These architectural details complement the museum rooms with the history of the estate.
Other historic sites
The manor house in Cherkutino was built by General Ivan Saltykov in the Annen Baroque style. The historic estate there included a rectangular park and three terraced ponds. In Zherekhovo, the Vsevolozhsky-Obolensky family estate complex is listed in the register of cultural heritage sites of Vladimir Oblast.
Alepino also has a surviving historic building: the stone Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos was built by parishioners in 1850, replacing an older wooden church. It is in a state of disrepair. The history of the churches and estates thus adds further specific local stories to Sobinsky District’s literary and natural history themes.
