Ustyuzhna is the administrative center of Ustyuzhensky District, is one of the Russian Federation’s historic towns, and has more than forty officially registered architectural monuments. The town’s architectural history spans churches and stone merchants’ houses, including a merchant’s house on the marketplace. The district also has a manor house museum, a park and a natural area in the Mologa valley.

Churches and Town History in Ustyuzhna

In the center of Ustyuzhna, stone merchants’ houses from the 19th century and the 17th-century Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God have been preserved. The Kazan Church was built between the 17th and 19th centuries in the Stroganov Baroque style and is decorated with frescoes by masters from Yaroslavl. It offers a chance to consider architecture and fresco painting as two distinctive aspects of the local cultural heritage.

The octagonal Church of the Annunciation stands on the bank of the Vorozha. During the Time of Troubles, it was one of the town’s defensive positions. The merchant’s house of Ya. M. Pozdeev also stands on the marketplace. Together, these buildings illustrate different aspects of the town’s history: religious architecture, its former defensive role and its merchants’ heritage.

Exhibitions and Crafts

The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God houses local history and art history exhibitions from the Ustyuzhna Local History Museum, as well as a memorial iconostasis by masters from the Moscow Armoury. Manor House and Landscapes in the District

The Batyushkov family and A. I. Kuprin Museum-Estate is in the village of Danilovskoye, 13 kilometers from Ustyuzhna. The exhibition explores the lives and work of members of the Batyushkov noble family, as well as Kuprin’s stay at the estate. The same village is home to a 19th-century park in the Versailles style, which is one of Ustyuzhensky District’s natural monuments.

Another landscape feature of the district is the “Vanskaya Luka” geomorphological and biocenotic complex. It lies in the Mologa valley, 40 kilometers from Ustyuzhna. Alongside the town’s history, the river valley setting and the distinctive classification of this landscape complex are useful points of reference for exploring the region.
