In Kantemirovskiy District, steppe vegetation, memorial sites and excursions with local themes offer different perspectives on the destination. In the eastern part of the Stepnoy protected area, the Morozovye Verby ravine contains a botanically and ecologically valuable complex of steppe vegetation.

Steppe, Wildlife and Recreation Areas

Plants in the protected area that are listed in both the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation and the Red Data Book of Voronezh Oblast include Bellevalia sarmatica, Hyssopus cretaceus and feather grass. Elaeosticta lutea and Salvia aethiopis are also listed in the Red Data Book of Voronezh Oblast. The wildlife is diverse, too: vertebrates in the protected area include the bobak marmot, speckled ground squirrel, grey dwarf hamster, steppe polecat, common (also known as agile) lizard and adder.

At the eastern edge of the settlement of Kantemirovka is a recreation area that is also home to a colony of ground squirrels (bobak marmots) listed in the Red Data Book. A birch grove near Kantemirovka is another recreation area, with panoramic views of the settlement. Near Titarevka are the steppe watershed lakes known as limans: shallow, basin-shaped lakes. A landslide ridge nearby is a geological feature of the area.

Memorial Sites and Cultural Attractions

The central Alley of Glory in the urban settlement of Kantemirovskoye commemorates the heroic deeds of the heroes of the Kantemirovka area. It is also home to a mass grave of soldiers and partisans who died during World War II. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Kantemirovskoye is considered one of the district’s spiritual centers of Orthodoxy and a unique historical monument.

In Kulikovka, the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord is a historical monument and a destination on the “Mikhaylovka–Bondarevo” excursion. Osikovka is home to a restored church dedicated to the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos. Memorials, churches and historical sites thus offer a variety of cultural points of interest across the district.

A cultural complex in the building of the District House of Culture (Rayonny Dom Kultury) includes the District Museum of Local History, the M. M. Goptarev Art Gallery, a library, a children’s art school, a sports complex and a park and recreation area. Local history and art sit alongside sports and recreation facilities within the complex.

Excursions and Activities in the District

The “Po sledam boevoy slavy” (“In the Footsteps of Military Glory”) excursion is intended for participants aged 6 and over and accommodates groups of 5 to 20 people. The route includes, among other stops, an open-air museum. This makes it different from excursions focused on a particular village or a single activity.

One of the centers for agrotourism in Kantemirovskiy District is located in the village of Kuznetsovka, in the Osikovskoye rural settlement. Its offerings include fishing and a pond for family recreation. The agrotourism center in Bondarevo also combines fishing with a cooking class as part of an excursion: together with local residents, participants prepare ukha (fish soup) over an open fire. Check current availability with the district’s Department of Culture.

Another excursion visits a craftsperson’s estate in Mikhaylovka. There, you can discover the district’s ethnic culture and take part in a master class; the program also includes a visit to a souvenir shop. For current availability, check with the organizer or the district’s Department of Culture.

A private fishing pond in Bugaevka is listed as a stop on the “Kantemirovka–Bugaevka” weekend excursion. It complements the fishing options at the agrotourism centers as a separate activity included in a weekend route.
