Pueblo San José is known as the second German colony. For travelers, the Parroquia San José Obrero and the festivals held throughout the year stand out as specific points of interest. If you are looking for hotels in Pueblo San José, the reason for your trip can help narrow down your options: would you like to stay during a festival, or are you more interested in church art and local history? You can therefore plan your stay around either a festival during the year or the local themes of church, art, and history.

The Church and Finding Your Way Around Town

The Parroquia San José Obrero is a Romanesque-style church. Its two towers can be seen from a great distance as you approach San José. Its features include 71 stained-glass windows brought from Europe and 14 wooden Stations of the Cross with inscriptions in German. The numbers highlight two distinct features: the windows stand out for their origins, while the Stations of the Cross are notable for their wood carvings and German lettering.

During a tour on a Saturday in April 2024, Ana Ines Schwindt explained the history of the town. Visitors saw paintings, altars, stained-glass windows, painted angels above the main altar, and columns. If you are planning to look inside the church, it is best to check in advance whether visits are possible.

Another landmark is Av. Fundador Eduardo Casey, described as San José’s “wide street,” with central medians. A monument to Sergio Denis stands on one of the central medians. While the church towers are visible as you approach, the monument is located on one of the avenue’s central medians.

Local History and Cultural Events

The Museo del Club Germano Argentino reopened as part of the 2023 Kerb program. At the 2026 Kerb program, the “Raíces que cuentan” project presented two scenes featuring historical photographs and spontaneous conversations in the German dialect. The two program events took different forms: the reopening of a museum and a staged presentation using photographs and language. In this way, local history and German culture feature in different types of events.

Festivals and Culinary Events

The Kerb of San José is a patron-saint festival held on the first weekend of May. The program includes religious celebrations, a civic parade, Kosser tournaments, and presentations by local institutions on German traditions and culture. The different elements offer a glimpse of the festival’s many facets: religious celebration, a community parade, and contributions to local culture.

The Fiesta de la Carneada (slaughter festival) takes place in July. Tastings include raw ham, Bondiola, white and black blood sausage, Queso de cerdo, cooked chorizo, beef, pork, and Füllsen. The Füllsen Fest traditionally takes place in November and celebrates Volga German cuisine. The three events mentioned are therefore held on the first weekend of May, in July, and traditionally in November.

The months mentioned distinguish the event options, while the architectural and cultural themes offer additional points to consider when choosing when to stay.
