General Lavalle: Squares, History and Nature
Accommodation in General Lavalle
General Lavalle brings together several themes that are easy to distinguish when planning a trip: public squares and the port area in town, history in the Casco Urbano, and birdwatching. The Partido de General Lavalle also includes protected areas and other landscapes. This lets you decide whether local history, a festive event or nature watching should be the focus of your stay.
Squares and the Port Area
Plaza Arirang is in the Casco Urbano of General Lavalle, at the intersection of López de Armentia and Ernesto Gibson. Its facilities include children's play areas, barbecue grills, an amphitheater and a boardwalk. Paseo de la Rivera “Islas Malvinas” is on Avenida Thompson and is a tourist recreation area as well as a port zone. The two places offer different points of reference: the facilities shape the atmosphere of the plaza, while the paseo is primarily a port and recreation area.
History Between the Town Center and the Region
The historic walking tour through the Casco Urbano of General Lavalle is free and introduces the history of significant buildings that form part of the town's historical and cultural heritage. In the Partido de General Lavalle, the tour also includes a walk through the port area, a visit to the Museo Regional Santos Vega, and a finish at the Ría Ajó. It thus combines local history with the port area and the banks of the Ría.
The Museo Regional Santos Vega in the urban center of General Lavalle presents a chronology of local history, materials about Santos Vega, rural objects and a recreated pulpería. If you plan a visit, check the current opening hours. The ruins of Los Saladeros del Predio Histórico in the Partido de General Lavalle offer another glimpse into the region's heritage. They date from the heyday of the saladeros and include Los saladeros de Pedro Luro and the San Pedro, San Carlos and San León saladeros.
Birdwatching and Nature in the Partido de General Lavalle
Birdwatching along rural roads in the town of General Lavalle takes in native and migratory birds in the local wetlands and lagoons. In the wider area of the Partido de General Lavalle, responsible nature excursions follow country roads and pass through natural areas where birds can be observed in wetlands and lagoons. The Pampas birding tour offers excursions and birdwatching walks through woodlands, lagoons, grasslands and crab flats in the southern part of Bahía Samborombón. This allows you to choose between birdwatching along rural roads in the town and tours through the different landscapes of the Partido.
The natural attractions of the Partido also include Parque Nacional Campos del Tuyú. It covers 3,000 hectares of the Pampas ecoregion and protects a wetland connected to a natural estuary and of high conservation value. Its landscapes include lagoons, wetlands, crab flats, Cortaderales, Espartillares and Tala groves. From Buenos Aires and La Plata, drive via Autovía 2, Ruta Provincial 63 and Ruta Provincial 11 to General Lavalle, the park's starting point. Kayak excursions led by Amgaa Yacht Club also take place at Puerto de la Ría Ajó; check the provider's details before your trip.
An Annual Event in March
The Fiesta Nacional Semana de Santos Vega has been held every year on the second weekend of March since 1948, in honor of the gaucho payador Santos Vega. Since 1981, the festival has taken place in the park of the Museo Regional Santos Vega on the banks of the Ría Ajó. If you would like to coordinate your trip with the Fiesta, check the specific date for that year.
