Coastal views, lagoons and gently rolling landscapes shape the travel experience in General Pueyrredón Partido. In the southern part of the partido, Ruta 11 runs along the coast; sections lined with groves and panoramic views give the route its character. At Laguna de los Padres, nature conservation, recreation and sport take center stage. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether the coast, waterside scenery or cultural history is your main interest.

Coast, Sierras and Rural Landscapes

Along Mar del Plata’s 47-kilometer coastline, beaches, wide bays, cliffs and forests alternate. In the rural area around the city, a different landscape comes into view: sierras, gently rolling fields, groups of trees, lagoons, streams, fruit and vegetable farms, and quarries. The Sierras del Acha, de Valdez, de los Padres, de los Difuntos and de la Peregrina also rise among cultivated fields and old groups of trees. At 230 meters, Sierra de la Peregrina is the highest of these elevations.

If you’re interested in the landscapes along the roads, three paved routes offer further points of reference: Ruta 88, Camino de las Canteras and Camino San Francisco de Asís pass through areas with fruit and vegetable farms and quarries. Along its route through the area, Ruta 226 offers hilly terrain, lagoons, streams and sierras. There are also tourist and recreational opportunities for nature experiences, supported by comprehensive infrastructure.

Ruta Provincial Interbalnearia 11 also connects landscapes with cultural history: at kilometer 34.5 in General Pueyrredón Partido is the Complejo Unidad Turística de Chapadmalal, designated a National Historic Monument. Restoration or access conditions may change, so check them before planning a visit.

Laguna de los Padres: Nature, Sport and History

The Laguna de los Padres Municipal Nature Reserve is dedicated to protecting and preserving flora, fauna and bodies of water. It is also intended for recreational, sporting, cultural, and scientific and educational activities. At the lagoon, the Alberto Valle rowing club is suited to rowing; the body of water is also considered an important destination for sport fishing. Nature conservation and a variety of activities are equally part of the character of this place.

Four authorized entrances are marked for visitors. The main entrance is on Avenida de Los Misioneros. Three further entrances lead to the José Hernández Municipal Museum via Camino del Cabildo Indígena, to the island area via Calle Helmer Uranga, and to Avenida Padre Luis Varetto in the direction of Sierra de los Padres via Camino Cacique Cangapol. The José Hernández Municipal Museum is on Ruta 226 at kilometer 13.2, at the second entrance to the lagoon via Camino del Cabildo Indígena.

The museum’s permanent exhibition explores several chapters of regional history: early settlement, new population groups, the first Indigenous settlements and missions, and Chief Cangapol “El Bravo.” It also covers the region’s rural history and Estancia Laguna de los Padres. The museum is housed in the original main building of the former estancia, built in 1882; the Municipality of General Pueyrredón has designated the building as a site of heritage interest.

Architecture and Culture in Mar del Plata

In Mar del Plata, Casa sobre el Arroyo, locally also known as Casa del Puente, combines modern architecture with a distinctive setting in the park. Amancio Williams and Delfina Gálvez Bunge designed and built the house between 1943 and 1945. It is designated a National Historic-Artistic Monument, a heritage site of Buenos Aires Province, and a municipal heritage, cultural and natural asset; it is also considered a forest reserve. Visitors must register in advance for tours of the house, and each tour is limited to 30 people. Check current tour dates and registration requirements before visiting.

The Casa del Puente park comprises two adjoining city blocks crossed by the historic course of Arroyo Las Chacras. As an active environmental reserve, it provides a habitat for wild plant and animal species. Architecture and urban nature come together at this site.

Other architectural and historical landmarks offer different points of interest: the Juan Carlos Castagnino Municipal Art Museum is housed in Villa Ortiz Basualdo, a residence built in 1909 in the Norman picturesque style. Reducción de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de los Puelches was founded by Jesuits in the mid-18th century and is considered one of the early settlements of Mar del Plata. Built in 1873, the Chapel of Santa Cecilia was the city’s first solid building.

At Torreón del Monje on Punta Piedras, at the foot of Loma de Stella Maris, its fortress-like appearance and a legend associated with the building evoke the city’s cultural heritage. To the north, Parque Camet is highlighted as a green attraction on a tour of Mar del Plata. The port, meanwhile, brings together sights of sea lions, gulls, fishing boats, nets and fish traps; seafood and maritime dishes are also associated with it.

When choosing where to stay, your interests can guide your decision: coastal panoramas, nature and sport at Laguna de los Padres, or architecture and urban history in Mar del Plata offer different focuses for your trip.
