The Partido de Mar Chiquita offers two interconnected visitor areas: the coast and the inland region. The Partido also has 67 kilometers of beaches. This division provides a practical framework for choosing where to stay: you can focus on coastal scenery and the lagoon, or include rural tourism in the inland region. Planning therefore begins with a decision about the kind of trip you want, rather than a blanket assumption that it will be a beach vacation.

Coastal lagoon and protected landscape

The Albufera de Mar Chiquita is a shallow coastal lagoon connected to the sea, which periodically or occasionally receives fresh water from the mainland. The Sendero de la Albufera runs along its shore to the mouth where it meets the sea. The trail begins with an interactive presentation at the Sala de Interpretación de la Naturaleza. Both the lagoon itself and the trail along its shore are therefore specific nature highlights of the destination.

The Reserva de Biosfera Parque Atlántico Mar Chiquito includes ocean coastline, beaches, coastal dunes, grasslands, lagoons, and Pampas wetlands. The Reserva Natural Mar Chiquita protects three main habitats: the Albufera, coastal Pampas grasslands, and the dune belt. The natural landscape thus extends beyond the shore to include dunes, grasslands, and wetlands.

Access and activities

Public access to the Reserva Natural Mar Chiquita is via Kilometer 483 of Ruta Provincial N.º 11, through Balneario Parque Mar Chiquita. This locality is also at Kilometer 483 of Ruta Provincial N.º 11. The kilometer marker provides a specific reference point for reaching the nature reserve.

Fishing, surfing, and windsurfing are possible in the coastal towns of the Partido. Inland, rural tourism is available in Coronel Vidal, Vivoratá, General Pirán, Calfucurá, and Nahuel Rucá. Trip planning can therefore accommodate different interests: coastal activities and rural tourism in the named inland towns. If you want to explore Mar Chiquita, you can consider these themes separately or include them as different aspects of the Partido in your travel plans.

Attractions with a character of their own

In Balneario Parque Mar Chiquita, Escuela Primaria N.º 12 is considered Argentina’s first sustainable educational institution. It produces its own food and was built using recycled materials. Here, sustainable food production goes hand in hand with construction using recycled materials.

The Paseo paleontológico in Camet Norte is located by the sea. Life-size figures of the Pampas megafauna evoke a 20,000-year-old paleontological site. In Coronel Vidal, Museo Victor Abel Gimenez commemorates and showcases the extensive work of Víctor Abel Giménez. Parque Municipal El Diego in Santa Clara del Mar features a 13-meter-high sculpture, considered the largest monument to Diego Armando Maradona in South America. These places offer different points of interest: paleontological interpretation in Camet Norte, Giménez’s work in Coronel Vidal, and a Maradona monument in Santa Clara del Mar.
