Chubut: Whales, Railway and Welsh Culture
Accommodation in Chubut
Chubut can be explored through a wide range of experiences: whale and penguin watching, forests and lakes, Welsh culture and a historic narrow-gauge railway. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, start by considering which places and interests will shape your plans. The options below range from nature experiences to railway history.
Whales and Penguins on the Coast
PenĂnsula ValdĂ©s is in Argentina, in the province of Chubut, and has approximately 400 kilometers of coastline. It is home to globally significant breeding grounds for southern right whales. The whale season in Chubut runs from July to December; diving is also possible on PenĂnsula ValdĂ©s. If you are interested in marine wildlife and activities on the water, you will find two different ways to experience the coast here.
Punta Tombo welcomes hundreds of thousands of Magellanic penguins from September to April. The area was established as a reserve in 1972 to protect, conserve and better study the animals. At Centro Tombo, a walking tour introduces visitors to the penguins’ way of life. Coastal paths suitable for people with reduced mobility make it possible to observe penguins and their nests. Check seasonal information before your trip if wildlife watching is the main focus of your visit.
The seasonal windows offer different highlights: July and August are considered especially suitable for winter sports in Chubut, while whale season runs from July to December. Penguins begin arriving in Punta Tombo in September and remain until April. This means the stated periods for whales and penguins overlap from September to December; winter sports and whale season, on the other hand, coincide for part of their duration. This comparison can help you decide when to travel.
Welsh Heritage and Railway History
Gaiman is considered a symbol of the Welsh colony in Chubut. Its visitor attractions include Welsh chapels, houses with natural-stone or brick walls, and traditional tea houses. Tea culture is part of the town; it is also home to Ty Gwyn tea house, which Lady Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales, visited in 1995. Gaiman thus combines distinctive architecture with a culinary tradition that remains part of everyday life.
Several museums add to this cultural perspective. The Museo HistĂłrico Regional de Gales displays photographs of the first immigrants. The Museo de AntropologĂa in Gaiman is dedicated to traces of the Tehuelche people, who lived in the region. The two museums have different emphases: one explores the history of the immigrants, while the other focuses on the history of the Tehuelche.
Railway history can also be experienced in Chubut. La Trochita is a historic narrow-gauge railway that continues to run in its original condition, crossing the Patagonian steppe as the Viejo Expreso Patagónico. The 18-kilometer round trip from Esquel to Nahuelpan takes two hours. Another round trip between El Maitén and Kilometer 228 takes two and a half hours. In El Maitén, visitors can visit the railway museum and workshops, where maintenance is carried out and replacement parts are custom-made. If you are planning a ride, check the route information before booking.
Lakes and National Parks
Parque Nacional Los Alerces was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. In its ancient larch forest stands the “Abuelo,” a tree approximately 2,620 years old and 60 meters tall. Ruta Provincial 71 runs alongside the park, making it possible to travel from the northern zone to the central zone, passing Lakes Rivadavia, Verde and Futalaufquen. Natural heritage, giant trees and a specific road route offer different ways to plan a visit to this area.
On the RĂo Arrayanes, visitors can go individual sit-on-top kayaking or take sea-kayak tours, independently or with an authorized park guide. Boat trips on Lago MenĂ©ndez are also among the visitor experiences in Parque Nacional Los Alerces. Parque Nacional Lago Puelo protects more than 27,000 hectares of the Patagonian Forests ecoregion. Boat trips there can travel through bays to the sources of the Azul or Puelo rivers and as far as the Chilean border. A water sport is permitted in the eastern part of Lago Puelo; life jackets are required throughout the activity. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the different options on the water: some are described as kayaking or sea-kayak tours, others as boat trips or as a water sport in general.
Winter Sports and Travel Planning
Centro de Actividades Deportivas La Hoya has a snow park for snowboarding and 11 ski lifts. As infrastructure details can change, check the latest information before visiting. July and August are considered especially suitable months for winter sports in Chubut. Together with the whale and penguin seasons, these dates provide a practical guide to the seasons, although not all experiences take place during the same travel period.
The places offer something for different travel interests; the best order and time to visit depend on which ones matter most to you.
