Embalse brings together lakeside scenery, water sports, and the history of the Unidad Turística. The lake shapes the landscape, while the historic complex and recreational offerings reveal other sides of the town. To plan your stay, you can consider these themes separately: landscape and beaches, cultural history, and activities on the water and along the shore.

Lake, Dam, and Beaches

The lake at Embalse is the largest in Córdoba Province. The Embalse Dam is 50 meters high and 360 meters long. This means the waterside landscape and a major structure stand side by side as two distinct aspects of the town. The beaches also each have their own character; they differ both in their appearance and in the recreational opportunities they offer.

The two beaches have distinctly different settings. Playa Las Piedras is a natural, unspoiled beach where rock formations blend with the mountain landscape. Playa La Costa, by contrast, is a wide sandy beach for relaxing, sunbathing, or playing with children. You can choose between a rocky setting connected to the mountain landscape and a wide sandy beach.

History and Culture

The Unidad Turística Embalse was built on the shore of the reservoir between 1946 and 1955. In its historic form, the complex included hotels, shopping arcades, a cinema-theater, a cultural space, and 51 bungalows. Altogether, it accommodated more than 3,000 people. This combination makes the complex recognizable as a versatile historic site, bringing together accommodation, shopping, cinema, and culture.

The site’s architectural history is also connected with the museum: a preserved substation from the original project houses the Museo Municipal. At the Museo Municipal Juan Carlos Alba Posse, a gallery presents the heritage of the Comechingones. This connects the history of the tourism complex with a cultural subject that has its own place in the museum.

Activities on the Water and Land

At Balneario Jarana, there is a zip line, kayak and SUP board rentals, and opportunities for sailing. The calm waters of Embalse are also suitable for kayaking, open-water swimming, kitesurfing, surfing, water skiing, and boating. When choosing what to do, it is useful to distinguish between the specific offerings at the balneario and the different activities available on the lake: you can choose based on your preferred water sport.

In summer, Balneario Municipal offers recreational classes and sports tournaments for the whole family. If you are considering family activities, you can treat these seasonal offerings as a separate part of your trip planning, alongside the beaches and water sports.

The shores and paths around the lake at Embalse are suitable for trekking, cycling, and horseback riding. There is also catch-and-release sport fishing. For a stay that does not revolve solely around the water, these offer additional options for getting active along the lakeshore and fishing.
