Unquillo offers nature and hiking as well as museums, architecture and cultural venues. When planning your trip, you can organize these highlights according to your interests: trails in the nature reserve, art collections or architectural history. Local crafts and a cinema are also among the possible themes of a stay.

Nature and Trails in Unquillo

In the western part of the municipality lies the Reserva HĂdrica Recreativa Natural Municipal Los Quebrachitos, a municipal nature reserve covering 5,000 hectares. It includes the headwaters of the Cabana and Las Ensenadas streams. The Reserva therefore provides a clear nature-focused option for planning your trip.

The Sendero Los Chorritos del Cabana is a hiking option in the publicly accessible area of the nature reserve. Another option is the self-guided blue loop trail: it runs from the Unquillo bus terminal to the Gruta de Lourdes and returns via the Arroyo Cabana. The two routes therefore differ in their descriptions: the Sendero is identified as a hiking option in the Reserva, while the blue loop trail is a self-guided route with a starting point, destination and return leg.

Museums and Architectural History

The Casa Museo y Capilla Buffo is located in the publicly accessible area of the Reserva Los Quebrachitos. Advance registration is mandatory for entry. The chapel dates from 1942 and is designed in the Art Nouveau style, inspired by the bloom of the Holy Thistle. If you include the architecture of this site in your plans, you should also take the required registration into account.

The Casa Museo Spilimbergo was established in 1970 in the former post station “El Descanso del Pasajero.” The painter Lino Spilimbergo acquired the station as his residence during the last twelve years of his life. Its preserved collection includes an original mural, etchings, drawings and photographs, as well as Spilimbergo’s work tools. The combination of the building’s former use and its collection gives this museum a distinctive art-historical focus.

The Casa de la Cultura, also known as “Casona Antoniazzi,” is housed in a building constructed in 1908 as a residence for the Antoniazzi family. It now hosts social and cultural activities. The building also features architectural elements of the Tudor style from England. This makes it possible to connect the history of the house with a look at its design.

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Unquillo (MACU) opened in 2017 with three exhibition rooms, a shop, a cafeteria and facilities that meet international standards. Admission is free, and the museum is open to the public. The Casa Museo y Centro Cultural Rivolta offers a different cultural focus: it was the home and studio of Eugenio, David and Marta Rivolta, and since 2011 it has served as a cultural center promoting local artists. Visitor access may change during renovation work, so check accessibility before your visit.

Culture, Crafts and Activities

Unquillo’s century-old architectural heritage includes hundreds of houses, villas and summer palaces. Since 1937, the Doble Avenida has been the venue for Unquillo’s carnivals. These two themes offer different points of interest: the buildings shape the town’s architectural history, while the Avenida is associated with the carnivals.

The Cine Teatro Municipal has an INCAA 3D auditorium, where new national and international films are screened. The program and technical facilities may change, so check the current listings before going to the cinema. If you are interested in local crafts, the Camino de Artesanos offers visits to workshops and production sites, where craftspeople, entrepreneurs and artists showcase their creations.

A craft workshop for working with gourds also offers insight into a specific process: visitors learn how the gourds are prepared and then made into finished products.

Getting There and Planning

You can reach Unquillo by bus with the IntercĂłrdoba company or by car via the E53. To plan your trip, you can first decide how to get there and then choose between nature trails, museums, architecture, cinema and crafts. Advance registration is mandatory for the Casa Museo y Capilla Buffo, and access to the Casa Museo y Centro Cultural Rivolta may change during renovation work.
