Gobernador Virasoro: Mate Culture and History
Accommodation in Gobernador Virasoro
For a stay in Gobernador Virasoro, several cultural highlights stand out: the Fiesta del Mate y la Amistad, the mate and natural history collections at the museum in the former railway station, and the Jesuit-Guaraní history of San Alonso. The range extends from mate culture and local history to an archaeological site in the surrounding area.
Mate Festival and Regional Traditions
Under Law No. 6135/12, Gobernador Virasoro is the permanent venue for the Fiesta del Mate y la Amistad, designated as a provincial festival. Its location is permanent; the program for individual editions may change. At the 2024 Fiesta Provincial del Mate y la Amistad, a competition for the best preparation of bitter mate was one of the main attractions. The competition was part of that edition, not a program item guaranteed for future years.
Another cultural highlight was the 18th provincial celebration, “Chake el Bicho, Tomá Caña con Ruda.” It took place on July 31, 2026, from 8:00 p.m. to midnight at the Gimnasio Municipal Dr. Mario B. Aquino in Gobernador Virasoro, and drew on the Guaraní tradition of drinking caña con ruda to welcome August 1.
Museum in the Former Railway Station
The Museo Histórico Geográfico y Natural is housed in Virasoro’s former railway station. It displays historical objects and documents, elements of yerba mate culture, natural history collections, and exhibits on regional identity. The collection thus brings together several perspectives: local history and documents alongside natural history and mate culture. If you are interested not only in the festival but also in historical and natural history topics, the museum offers another way to explore regional identity.
San Alonso: Chapel, History, and Trails
The Capilla Jesuítica Guaraní San Alonso is located in Paraje San Alonso on National Route 14, about 14 km from Gobernador Virasoro, and is now within its jurisdiction. The building was constructed after 1714 and belonged to the Jesuit-Guaraní reduction of Saints Peter and Paul. In the wider travel destination of Departamento Santo Tomé, San Alonso served as an estancia outpost, post station, and religious center until 1818.
The trails there offer different points of focus. The Sendero Tupambaé passes through the archaeological area of the chapel ruins and explains the site’s Jesuit period. The Sendero de los Payé highlights native medicinal herbs that have been used as natural remedies since the Jesuit era. The first trail focuses on ruins and history, while the second explores plant knowledge and its historical use.
The location of the ruins also offers a connection with nature: in the wider travel destination of Departamento Santo Tomé, they are surrounded by a remnant of the Bosque Paranaense, which is an additional attraction for visitors to the site.
