If you’re considering Sauce as a destination for a stay, two points of reference stand out: the Río Guayquiraró on the border with Entre Ríos Province, and the town’s religious history. The vegetation types, provincial roads, and fishing also offer concrete starting points for planning your trip.

River and vegetation in Sauce

Sauce lies on the Río Guayquiraró, which separates the town from Entre Ríos Province. Ecologically, Sauce belongs to the Espinal phytogeographic province and the Ñandubay district. The district’s characteristic tree is Prosopis affinis, locally known as Ñandubay or Espinillo. These features give the destination’s natural character a clear definition: the river, its ecological classification, and a named tree species are all part of it.

The landscape includes hygrophilous forests, savannas and wooded prairies, as well as xerohalophytic forests. The stated land-area breakdown gives these shares as 28 percent, 20 percent, and 9 percent, respectively. Low forests are also found, usually associated with wet prairies. This means the landscape cannot be reduced to the river or a single type of vegetation. It comprises several named habitats that, alongside the area’s cultural history, offer their own reason to choose this destination.

Getting there and finding your way around

Provincial Route 23 connects Sauce with Perugorría and continues from there to Goya and westward to Mercedes. Provincial Route 126 connects Sauce with Curuzú Cuatiá and continues to Esquina and San José de Feliciano in Entre Ríos. These towns give you a concrete sense of Sauce’s road connections. If you plan to use Provincial Route 126, check current road conditions before setting out.

Religious history and townscape

An image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel arrived in Sauce in the early 19th century. The settlement was subsequently known as pueblo de la Virgen del Carmen del Sauce. This naming history links the town’s development with its religious tradition. Law 6667, dated April 24, 2024, declares the Parroquia Virgen del Carmen a historic monument and part of the cultural heritage of Corrientes Province. The Parroquia Ntra. Sra. del Carmen is also associated with the town’s religious life, community life, and history.

On July 16, the residents of Sauce celebrate Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the town’s patron saint. If you’re traveling for this celebration, check the program in advance, as details may change. The streetscape also reflects different eras: buildings from earlier times stand alongside modern ones. As you explore the town, you’ll see both a visible connection to its history and more recent construction.

Fishing and finding a hotel

Fishing in Sauce offers the chance to catch fish in peaceful surroundings while experiencing the landscape along the Río Guayquiraró. Specialized guides support anglers with their expertise. If you plan to use a guide, check their current availability before your trip.

Is the July celebration important to you, or are the river, vegetation, and fishing your priorities? If you’re planning a fishing trip, you’ll also need to check whether a specialized guide is available. This way, you can focus your search on the features of the town that will actually shape your stay.
