Hornillos: Historic Posta and Tren Solar
Accommodation in Hornillos
The Posta de Hornillos brings together a historic site and a connection to the Tren Solar de la Quebrada in Hornillos. Argentine Law No. 25,574 declared it a National Historic Site. The site is located in the town of Maimará, in the Tilcara Department of Jujuy Province.
Historic Site and Architectural Features
The Museo Posta de Hornillos is housed in a complex made of adobe, mud and cardĂłn. The grounds are arranged around stone-paved courtyards and corrals. For an architectural overview, the materials and layout therefore go together: adobe, mud and cardĂłn refer to the building materials used, while the courtyards and corrals describe the arrangement of the complex.
The grounds also include a 20th-century chapel. It was built using construction techniques common in the Quebrada and follows its architectural style. Several specific features thus stand out at the Posta: its legal designation as a National Historic Site, the complex arranged around courtyards and corrals, and a chapel built in the regional style.
The Tren Solar Stop
On May 2, 2025, a stop for the Tren Solar de la Quebrada was inaugurated at the historic Posta de Hornillos. It was established to facilitate access to the 42-kilometer route between Volcán and Tilcara. The route is powered by solar energy and lithium batteries. The stop is therefore the local rail connection; the 42 kilometers describe the section between the two endpoints.
The Tren Solar de la Quebrada’s 360° experience covers the full journey, with six scheduled stops: Volcán, Tumbaya, Purmamarca, Posta de Hornillos, Maimará and Tilcara. This places Hornillos in context both as an individual stop and as part of the full journey. If you are planning a train trip, check the current timetable in advance.
Cultural Connections in the Area
On August 23, 2025, a traditional ceremony honoring Pachamama was held at the Posta de Hornillos. It was part of Jujuy’s official August calendar of events and included rituals of gratitude and offerings. The date and occasion give this cultural connection a specific timeframe.
In the immediate area around the destination, the Antigal de Hornillos is also featured in Maimará’s tourism offerings alongside the Posta de Hornillos as archaeological cultural heritage. In this offering, the Posta and the Antigal are presented together as cultural sites.
Also on May 2, 2025, El Patio Hornillos was introduced as a food offering with a local identity. It was intended to complement the visitor experience with regional flavors and serve as a cultural meeting place. This should be understood as a proposed initiative, complementing the Posta’s architectural and cultural themes with a culinary perspective.
