Palpalá: Mountain Forest, Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Palpalá
Hiking trails, mountain forest and cultural heritage reveal different sides of Palpalá and its surrounding area. The routes described vary considerably in duration and difficulty, so you can tailor your plans to the amount of time you want to spend.
Mountain Forest and Trails in the Serranías del Zapla
The Serranías del Zapla Ecological Reserve extends north of the Río Grande across the entire Department of Palpalá. In the Yungas ecosystem, it protects higher-elevation areas of mountain rainforest and montane forest. The Mirador Norte in Villa Turística Serranías del Zapla offers views of Palpalá and the hills of the Serranías.
Villa Turística lies on the flank of the Serranías at an elevation of 1,450 meters. An eight-kilometer uphill gravel road leads there from Provincial Route 56. Conditions along the route may vary seasonally, especially during heavy rain. The villa has accommodations, camping areas and asadores; check current operations before your stay.
There are three self-guided trails open to visitors at Villa Turística. Sendero Los Monos is an easy, 20-minute trail behind the Petit Hotel in the villa. Monkeys and coatis may occasionally be spotted there. Sendero Los Patos is of moderate difficulty, takes three hours and begins five kilometers before the entrance to the villa. Its landscape features include regenerating mountain rainforest and the spread of native tree species in the eucalyptus forest. The two time estimates show a substantial difference in the time required. As trail conditions and access may change, check the current status before setting out.
Another hike leads to the summit of Cerro Zapla: the round trip takes six hours and is highly challenging. Check the applicable access regulations and whether a guide is available in advance. Visitors can also book guided mountain biking with specialist guides at Villa Turística; check their current availability as well.
The overo is found in the Yungas within the reserve. Its tracks may occasionally be seen near streams, but the animal itself is difficult to spot. Those interested in wildlife can also look for signs along the trail, without expecting to see the animal.
Religious and Historical Heritage in Río Blanco
Nearby in Río Blanco, the chapel and sacristy of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Río Blanco and Paypaya are protected as historical and cultural heritage of Jujuy Province for their historical, religious and symbolic value. The designation was published in October 2025. The festival in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary of Río Blanco and Paypaya is also recognized as living cultural heritage of the province and is considered one of its most representative religious expressions.
Every Sunday in October, Río Blanco welcomes pilgrims honoring Our Lady of the Rosary of Río Blanco and Paypaya, the patron saint of Jujuy Province. The recurring date gives this religious tradition a clear place in the annual calendar. In Río Blanco, Calle San Juan also follows an old royal road. All of its historic houses were built before the end of the 19th century.
The region’s history also includes sugar production: sugar was first produced in Jujuy Province in Río Blanco around 1650. An old wooden sugar mill is part of the Cazón family collection. The “Héroes de Malvinas” Museum is a historical and educational site where recent history is conveyed through veterans’ firsthand accounts.
